Eminem

Whatever Dre just let it run, ey yo, turn the beat up a little bit. Ey yo, this song is for anyone. Fuck it, just shut up and listen. Ey yo, I sit back, with this pack, of zigzags and this bag, of this weed. It gives me, the shit needed to be, the most meanest MC on this, on this earth. 'Cause since birth I've been cursed with this curse to just curse and just blurt this berserk and bizarre shit that works and it sells and it helps in its self to relieve all this tension dispensing me, sentence is getting it. The stress has been eating me, recently off of this chest and I rest to get peacefully but at least have the decency in you to leave me alone when you freaks see me out in the streets, when I'm eating or feeding my daughter to not come and speak to me, I don't know you and no, I don't owe you a motherfuckin' thing. I'm not Mr.'N Sync and I'm not what your friends think I'm not Mr. Friendly, I can be a prick, if you tempt me my tank is on empty, no patience is in me and if you offend me. I'm lifting you ten feet in the air, I don't care who was there and who saw me just jaw you. Go call you a lawyer, file you a lawsuit, I'll smile in the courtroom and buy you a wardrobe. I'm tired of all you, I don't mean to be mean but it's all I can be, it's just me and I am, whatever you say I am, if I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the papers, the news, everyday I am. Radio won't even play my jam, 'cause I am, whatever you say I am, if I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the papers, the news, everyday I am I don't know it's just the way I am. Sometimes I just feel like my father, I hate to be bothered With all of this nonsense it's constant, and "Oh, it's his lyrical content!" the song "Guilty Conscience" has gotten such rotten responses And all of this controversy circles me and it seems Like the media immediately points a finger at me. So I point one back at 'em, but not the index or the pinky or the ring or the thumb, it's the one you put up when you don't give a fuck. When you won't just put up with the bullshit they pull, 'cause they full of shit too. When a dude's gettin' bullied and shoots up his school and they blame it on Marilyn And the heroin, where were the parents at? And look at where it's at Middle America, now it's a tragedy, now it's so sad to see an upper class city having this happening then attack Eminem 'cause I rap this way. But I'm glad 'cause they feed me the fuel that I need for the fire to burn and it's burnin' and I have returned and I am, whatever you say I am, if I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the papers, the news, everyday I am. Radio won't even play my jam, 'cause I am, whatever you say I am, if I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the papers, the news, everyday I am I don't know it's just the way I am. I'm so sick and tired of being admired that I wish that I would just die or get fired and drop from my label and stop with the fables I'm not gonna be able to top on "My name is" and pigeon holdin' to some poppy sensations, they cop me rotation at rock 'n' roll stations and I just do not got the patience to deal with these cocky Caucasians who think I'm some wigga who just tries to be black 'cause I talk with an accent and grab on my balls. So they always keep asking the same fucking questions, what school did I go to, what hood I grew up in, the why, the who, what, when and where and the how, 'til I'm grabbing my hair and I'm tearing it out You've been driving me crazy I can't take it, I'm racing, I'm pacing, I stand and I sit And I'm thankful for every fan that I get, but I can't take a shit In the bathroom without someone standing by it. No I won't sign your autograph, you can call me an asshole, I'm glad 'cause I am, whatever you say I am, if I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the papers, the news, everyday I am. Radio won't even play my jam, 'cause I am, whatever you say I am If I wasn't, then why would I say I am? In the papers, the news, everyday I am I don't know it's just the way I am.

I got to say that he's the best even though people had been saying that Macklemore is the second best, I still think that Eminem will never be replaced. The king of rap, king of lyrics and king of my heart. Keep on going, rap until you die. Please Eminem, come to Singapore, just for once. I'm pretty sure lots of your fans in Singapore will be able to die peacefully.

What Americans want.....

no longer seems to matter to Republicans.

Grand Theft Auto V Review

In gaming today, we really only have a few moments we can all rally around and enjoy. The launch of new consoles like the Xbox One and PS4 are really all we have left, due to the annualization of many of gaming's biggest franchises.Thankfully, we still have Rockstar's juggernaut, Grand Theft Auto.It has been over five years since Rockstar North put out a full game, and it seems like each time they do, they pull out all the stops and amaze gamers worldwide.I'm happy to say, this is indeed the case with Grand Theft Auto V, and Rockstar North creates a new benchmark for gaming.

Grand Theft Auto V tells the tale of not one, but three characters: Michael, Franklin and Trevor.Michael is a long time criminal, who retires and settles down with his wife and two kids in the bustling city of Los Santos.Retired for nearly 10 years, he was drawn back into the life through the early course the game thanks to another character, Franklin.

TRILOGY OF TERROR (1975)

If you like Karen Black this is the most Karen Black-iest movie you will find. All in one classic 70's TV-movie you get three stories starring Ms. Black. The first one features her as a teacher that one of her students has the hots for. So naturally he takes her to the drive-in, drugs her and date-rapes her. Luckily there's a twist ending that's sorta happy but not really. Then we get Black in what's basically a dual-role as a woman with a crazy split-personality. That story's kind of forgettable but the last story, and the one everyone whose ever heard of this movie knows, is very memorable since it stars a little wild Zuni-fetish doll who goes ape-shit and tries to kill Karen. This is one of those things that if you saw it when you were a kid you may have been scarred for life. There were quite a few 70's TV-flicks like that and this is one of the best ones just for this last tale alone.

There was a TV-movie sequel in 1996 that I've never seen but since the 90's were generally so awful, and TV in the 90's was probably the worst thing ever, I'll just say it blew.

If you want to see a whole Island full of angry murderous Zuni-fetish dolls gone berserk check out .

Understanding The Nordic Myths (9/17/13)

To understand the mythology of the Nordic people, you have to understand their beliefs. Most of their myths (along with the myths of other cultures) feature the notion that nature has somehow gone berserk and betrayed them. Therefore, forces of nature are personified. From this, the forces of nature almost always take human form and interact with humans. So, you have humans bargaining for, and trying to win, favor with the gods.

Let's take a closer look at the Norse Gods:

Yanis Varoufakis: No Signal

Yves here. Varoufakis' post may seem a bit off topic for this blog, but he has provided a history of censorship in Greece as seen through his personal relationship with the recently-shuttered state broadcaster ERT. And that is a more useful reference point for Americans (and likely most Anglo-Saxon readers). Many Americans labor under the delusion that we still have a free press in this country. Now admittedly, it's not the heavy-handed "media as relentless mouthpiece for the government regime" sort. But the US has the most sophisticated and pervasive propaganda apparatus in the modern world (see Alex Carey's terrific book Taking the Risk out of Democracy for more details). Many ideas and individuals are relegated to what Daniel Hallin calls the "". One example: during the 2009 confidence-building exercise known as bank stress tests, quite a few commentators in the blogosphere, including yours truly, derided them as patently phony. But you saw no acknowledgment of this criticism in the MSM, which instead played up the Punch and Judy fights between the regulators and the banks (gee, if the banks are upset, the tests must be serious, right?)

The process extended for several months, and midway through, former bank examiner Bill Black on the Bill Moyers show declared that that no real stress tests were going on. Plenty of journalists watch Moyers.

Anime: Berserk: The Golden Age Arc 2

BERSERK: THE GOLDEN AGE ARC 2 - BATTLE FOR DOLDREY (15)2 Discs (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Distributor: Manga Entertainment/Kaze UK) Running time: 93 minutes approx.

Little time is wasted in getting back into the violent throes of things in this glossy three part film series reboot of the popular franchise created by Kentaro Miura, and if you've not seen the first film The Egg Of The King, you should do so before moving onto this follow up.

We kick things off in typically bloody Berserk fashion as the Band Of Hawk, led by the enigmatic and androgynous Griffith, have their hands full with the army from Chuder and equally typical is the way that tacit man mountain Guts is slicing and dicing the opposition up with relative ease, thanks to his impressive fighting skills and ridiculously huge sword. This battle is a minor victory for the Hawk with a rematch for Doldrey, a reportedly impenetrable fortress under Chuder control, talking place not long after, delivering more blood splattered, limb severing action that sees the Hawk score another victory with brains and brawn - although mostly brawn, thanks to Guts.

BOX OFFICE REPORT (SEPT. 20--22): Hugh Jackman Locks Up Weekend Win with 'Prisoners'

Good news, bad news for the weekend. The good news was that moviegoers were eager to see a serious drama, with Prisoners taking the top spot. While the movie originally looked like HUGH JACKMAN's version of Taken, it quickly became clear that Prisoners wasn't looking for the easy money. It's a tough, hard-to-watch drama about a man struggling to retain his humanity after his daughter disappears.

The bad news? The rest of the box office stunk. Insidious: Chapter 2, last weekend's champion, dropped 64 percent, failing to follow up a $40 million-plus opening weekend. The Family brought in a measly $7 million and new release Battle of Year earned $5 million, all of which I'm sure came from people who just wanted to see CHRIS BROWN get punched in the face. The only bright spot down the list was Instructions Not Included, which expanded its theater count and jumped back into the top five.

Bioshock Infinite Review

Ah, nothing like playing catch up with games that were released, debated, and ultimately put aside until the December of decisions where the various outlets decide upon their favorite game of the past year. But I feel as if I can get a bit of traction while nobody is talking about it, but namely know what the blazes I'm talking about when I'll say Saints Row IV or Rayman Legends is my GOTY.Even though Bioshock Infinite is still quite good, but it is another Last of Us for me.

Fandom Chill Pill

All fandoms need to just calm down!I'm all for being passionate about things you love. But I'm not in favor of the massive overreactions of the past few weeks.I'm talking about two major casting announcements.A few weeks ago, Ben Affleck was announced as the new Batman. This week, Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson were announced for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. And, both fandoms went berserk with indignation.

This is by no means a new thing, fandom overreaction. It's probably been going on since the dawn of time. Just kidding. But it has been going on for a long, long time. It's just been made worse and seems more prevalent thanks to the internet.

Grand Theft Auto V Review

Grand Theft Auto is one of the most critically acclaimed, controversial, best selling, and revolutionary game series of all time. The first game that really drew the public's eye was GTA 3 which put you into the role of a sociopathic criminal and gave you free rein to do whatever you want in an open world game. Steal cars, kill cops, drive on the sidewalk, and so on. It won dozens of game of the year awards, become the best selling game of the year, and was heavily criticized by the media, government officials, parents, and everyone else who gets easily upset. But with GTA 3 the developer Rockstar Games found a formula that worked. Since then Grand Theft Auto has become one of the most popular series the video game industry has ever produced, with multiple games in the series selling over ten million copies; GTA San Andreas was even the highest selling PS2 game. The last major installment in the series was GTA 4 released back in 2008 to overwhelming critical acclaim. Winning several GOTY awards, selling 25 million units since its release, and has even made it on several best of the generation lists. That game was released five years ago and people have been itching for a sequel ever since, well in 2011 Rockstar finally announced that GTA 5 was in the works; and people have certainly shown their enthusiasm. Reportedly GTA 5 was even one of the most pre-ordered games of all time and is expected to sell over 20 million units within a year of its first year. Well it's finally arrived and I can say wholeheartedly the hype was 100% spot on. Unlike the previous GTA games this one revolves around three playable characters instead of one. The first is Michael, a retired criminal who was placed into witness protection several years back. Michael is a middle aged family man who got out of the game and was hoping to retire in the life of luxury, but he's miserable. He has a cheating wife, a jackass son, a promiscuous daughter, and is all around miserable. One day he is approached by a young man named Franklin, our second protagonist, who is looking for some work. Franklin grew up in the "bad" part of town and has been around the gang life for as long as he can remember. He currently works for a shady repo business but has dreams of making it big. So that's why he goes to the once extremely successful Michael. All this commotion ultimately gets the attention of our final character, Trevor. Trevor is a former army pilot who left that line of life and started some less than reputable work, and in the past he had actually done some jobs with Michael. Trevor currently lives out in Blaine County, a trailer park many go to in order to disappear but in his free time he's in on the arms trade. He's paranoid, methed out, and bat sh*t insane. The three protagonists eventually decide to go into business together with one common interest, make lots, and lots of money. I know I've said it twice this year, first with Bioshock Infinite and then with The Last of Us; but Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the greatest games I've ever played. Rockstar has taken the open world game to the next level, they haven't just made a map they really have made a whole world. The shear amount of stuff you can do is mind boggling, you can do pretty much everything: menial tasks like bike riding and tennis, create your own criminal enterprise, participate in the stock market and buy real estate, they even have in game TV shows. Like every GTA game there are tons of side missions and activities you can do throughout the city, amazingly even the most pointless of these activities are fun and worth your time. The game takes place in the fictional world of Los Santos, a satirical look at sunny California. Huge cities, beautiful mountains forests, and open dessert are yours to explore and use as your own personal play ground. It really does feel like the most complete open world ever put into a game. The game itself can only be described as a technological marvel, it's been announced that GTA 5 is the most expensive game ever with 265 million dollars going into development and marketing. You can really see where that money went; the game has a certain level of polish and shine that I've seen in few other games. The world is beautiful and vibrant while still feeling grimy like what the areas it's based off actually feel like. It's amazing that Rockstar has the technical prowess to make a game like this work on eight year old hardware and still have it look so good. I wouldn't compare it to something like The Last of Us but it still looks great. Like the last several GTA games the music is great, there are tons of licensed music from old school rock to modern day pop. The game also has an original score which hasn't been used in a GTA game and is one of the best original soundtracks featured in a game this year. One of the most drastic differences over the previous games would be the use of three main characters. Each of them come from different walks of life and have different personalities, with each of them likable in their own ways. Rockstar put a lot more time and effort into character development than in previous installments in the series. Each has their own sh*t they got to go through and don't just feel like they were put in the game to be controlled. Each feels like an essential part of the story and without them the game would feel like it's really missing something. You can change between characters using the D-pad pretty quickly and you'll see the camera pan up then over to where the character you're about to control will be. An interesting element that they implemented would be the use of stats on various gameplay elements that you can upgrade to improve in their own right. For example if you're a bad shot go to the shooting range and practice. Your aim will get better, you can hold onto more ammo, ect. Each of the characters starts off with different stats. Michael starts with higher gun stats while Franklin starts as a much better driver. Each of the characters also has some sort of special ability; Michael can go into bullet time to improve his aim, Franklin can slow down time while driving to make turns more easily, and Trevor can go into a berserker mode where in combat he takes half damage and deals out double. And I'd like to go ahead and say Trevor is one of the greatest characters ever put into a game. One thing that really impressed me about the game would be the story, with GTA 4 I wasn't overly impressed with the narrative. The story seemed more like a formality than anything else. For the most part people just played the game to kill hookers and beat up random people on the street. But of all the improvements the ones that are most obvious would be the driving and the combat. Driving has always been what the series has been known for, but in GTA 4 it was less than satisfactory, it felt like bumper cars; the driving in GTA 5 feels so much better. The driving can be difficult and does rely on a certain level of skill but isn't aggravating like GTA 4 and doesn't hold your hands as much as a game like. Saints Row. Whenever you do fail it's more likely to be your own fault than anything else. I'd also like to say there are a ridiculous number of cars in this game, everything from hunks of junk to the best sports cars money can buy; Rockstar has given us a lot of variety to choose from. The combat has also gone through a major overhaul and has been improved drastically. The combat in GTA 4 was sluggish and hard to handle, the weapons didn't feel like they had any weight and hand to hand combat was more trouble than anything else. GTA 5's combat is much closer to some of Rockstar's other games like Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3. The combat is fast, fluid and fun. New to the series are heists, there are several jobs throughout the game that if done properly can earn you millions. The fun part is you can actually plan the heists yourself; choose your team, your approach to pulling it off, and gather the material to get the job done. The main problem people seem to have with these jobs is that there aren't very many. When I first heard about this gameplay mechanic I was actually worried that the game would hold your hand through the entire process; while your options are limited they do let you run the show. Like I said earlier Los Santos is a satirical look at southern California and in some ways acts as a social commentary. It takes a hard look at real life; touching on subjects of corporate greed, celebrity worship, and social media domination. Now I have to talk about the elephant in the room, video game violence; there's reason that GTA is one of the most controversial series ever released. GTA gives you the ability to do just about anything and lets you live out your darkest fantasies. It seems that in the last few years shootings like the Sandy Hook incident and video games are often blamed, most often GTA. The media and ignorant old people think that since you play a violent video game that you must be violent. They completely overlook the fact that after years of research psychologists have found no hard evidence that violent games lead to violent behaviors. These people never just say that the shooters are sick, if at any point in their life they played something like Call of Duty it had to be the video game that drove them to kill innocent people. Anyone who goes along with this train of thought is either an idiot or has no idea what they're talking about. I've been playing violent games for years and I'm a pacifist. Grand Theft Auto 5 is a masterpiece; there really isn't another way to put it. The story, characters, gameplay, and setting are just about perfect; playing GTA 5 makes you feel like you're in a gangster film. The game is available for the PS3 and xbox 360, and I imagine that within the next six months it will be available for PS4, xbox one, and PC. If you have a system that can play this game, you need to get it. This is a game where years from now we'll look back and complain why all games can't be like this. In my opinion this isn't just the best GTA game, it's the best game Rockstar has ever done. Aside from just a few minor glitches I really can't point out a problem with the game, it really is that good. Rockstar has raised the bar for open world games by not just making one of the best games of this console generation, but one of the greatest games of all time.

10 compelling reasons why you should treat yourself to a new perfume

1) GIORGIO ARMANI'S NEW FRAGRANCE SI SMELLS SUBLIME!

It is his tribute to "modern femininity, an irresistible combination of grace, strength and independent spirit" and anyone who has already had the opportunity to smell his new fragrance, knows that the Italian designer par excellence kept his promise. It was love at first sniff for me -with warm notes of vanilla and bergamot, romantic floral elements and deep musky undertones- and the fact that the ever gorgeous, elegant and intelligent actress Cate Blanchett is the face of the perfume is the ultimate cherry on the cake.

Reviewing My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Season 3

"The Crystal Empire"

(The Season 3 Premiere, Episodes 1 and 2)

The Camp

Occasionally I think of a story idea and take it along for about a paragraph before I discover it's ridiculous and cliche. A typical stream of thought a few minutes ago led me to what amounts to nothing more than a prelude to John Carpenter's film Escape from New York. I'm bombarded by shared news stories on social media. Instead of watching television I get my news from the Internet. I seem to have inadvertently surrounded myself with a motley band of the most dour pessimists on the Web.

The rich are getting richer, food is being genetically manipulated, bees that pollinate our food supply are dying from pesticides or pesticide resistant parasites, The glaciers that supply China and India with fresh water are disappearing, radiation is leaking all over, governments are defaulting or trying to start wars, the oceans are filling with plastic, groundwater in the United States is contaminated with fracking chemicals. Coal burning power plants are being overtaxed by the rapid growth of charging electric cars. There are fewer customers because they don't get paid enough to have a spending allowance. The unemployed who are about to lose their benefits are going to go berserk.

Eminem reaches back to earlier days in 'Berzerk'

Of course, The 40-year-old inimitable and unmistakably rapper has released several albums since then, including his last effort, 2010's "Recovery," but hasn't managed to capture his former glory.

Marshall Mathers returns in rabid, pop-hook-baiting form. With both Dr. Dre and Rick Rubin on board, the song "BERZERK," promises to "take it back to straight hip-hop / and start it from scratch." Fittingly, this metal-rap rant has an old-school feel that evokes the late Eighties and especially samples Billy Squier's "The Stroke", as well as the Beastie Boys' "The New Style" and "Fight for Your Right," both songs taken from their 1986 debut album "Licensed to Ill," which Rubin had also produced. The punchy, guitar-and-beats driven song starts with a blast of static, hard guitar and roaring out of the gate sounding like the long-lost, fourth Beastie Boy.

delivers the lyrics with his familiar staccato flow, winding circles around the beat and building up to the hook, in which he declares, "Life's too short to not go for broke." The word 'bezerk' is used to describe a person who is acting in a wild rage or in an uncontrolled and irrational manner. It derives from the Old Norse word berserkr meaning "bear shirt" and was used for Germanic warriors who had the reputed habit of wearing a kind of shirt made from the pelt of a bear during battle. According to Old Norse literature these bezerkers were fierce warriors, who fought in a nearly uncontrollable, trance-like fury.

DVD Review: Movies 4 You--Sci-Fi Classics

I recently bought this DVD from Amazon for $5. It contains four different low-budget science-fiction films from the 1950s and 60s. Calling them "Sci-Fi Classics" is a very big stretch....there's certainly no FORBIDDEN PLANET or DESTINATION MOON here. However, each film does have various items of interest.

Let's take a look at the four movies:

Memories

"Holy shit, Custom Robo? God damn that game was fucking dope."

You bet it was, nameless fictional person I use to set myself up subject matters. The Custom Robo series made by NOISE studios focused on making strong combinations of mechs. guns. bombs, and pods to anally annihilate your opponents, and by extension, your friends. While being a popular series in Japan, the U.S. saw a relatively small cult following most likely due to its lack of marketing. Sales were stable, however, as Custom Robo Arena for the DS saw an overseas release as well. I'm not a big fan of the DS game, as this type of game on a super small screen felt clunky to me, but the Gamecube version will always be in my hall of fame.

Devil's Playground

I found a little treasure in the infamous $5 bin:Devil's Playground, a treat from our neighbors across the pond!

Newgen, a pharmaceutical company, has developed a drug meant to be a performance enhancer that you shoot into your veins instead of pour down your gullet. Everything goes smoothly for two months, but then the folks from the trial start vomiting like Linda Blair and having multiple organ failure; somehow the drug has given them a virus. This causes the company head to flip out, and round up all the guinea pigs. They find all except one, Angela Mills, who apparently is exhibiting none of the symptoms. They send their mercenary, Cole to find her, but alas, she has vacated her apartment and left no forwarding address.

Houses of the Holy (1973)

When I look back at Led Zeppelin's first five albums, I have a subconscious tendency to split them into two groups. I, II, and IV are the straightforward blues/rock albums (and also the better ones, in my opinion), and III and V (a.k.a. Houses of the Holy) are the more experimental ones, where Zep gets loose and plays around a bit with genres. It's appropriate that the band should take a little bit of a detour after that powerhouse of a fourth album, because, really, how do you follow that up? But they must have learned something, because in my opinion, HotH sounds a lot better than III, and even the band's off-the-wall genre experiments come off sounding a little bit tighter (even radio friendly) here than they did the last time the band really branched out. As an album, it's not fully as compelling as Zep's best, but it has a nice coherent atmosphere to it, and I have to say that I really enjoy it, for what it is.

The first track finds Jimmy Page back to his old habit of recycling musical ideas from his Yardbirds days. The riff from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor (which also featured an early application of Page's violin bow trick that would feature as a prominent element in Zep's version of Dazed and Confused) gets a facelift here in THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME, a rather compelling and upbeat track. The guitar tricks are more rhythmic than lead-y here, almost suggesting more of a Pete Townshend kind of approach, but are impressive nonetheless. As a result, it's a different kind of track for Led Zeppelin, but it works really well. Plant's vocals have some strange effect going on that you might find distracting, but that's really the only criticism I can come up with for this song.

Book Spotlight

BOOK TITLE: GATHERING STORM

AUTHOR NAME: VICTORIA DANANN

NAME OF SERIES AND BOOK NUMBER IN SERIES: THE ORDER OF THE BLACK SWAN, BOOK FIVE

What I Bought 8/30/2013

I do not have a single new comic coming out this week. Given I ought to have about 10 books this month, that's a little odd.

Avengers Arena #13, by Christos Gage (writer), Karl Moline (penciler), Mark Pennington (inker), Jean-Francois Beaulieu (colorist), Joe Caramagna (letterer), and Avengers Arena #14, by Dennis Hopeless (writer), Kev Walker (penciler, inker), Jason Gorder (inker), Jean-Francois Beaulieu (colorist), Joe Caramagna (letterer) - Who does Chase remind you of on that cover? He sort of looks like a young Harrison Ford, but I'm not sure. I feel like Andrasofszky was definitely using someone as a reference. It's kind of an adorable cover, setting aside the truth of their absence, which is terribly depressing.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magic movies 1+2

IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED MADOKA, STOP READING AND WATCH THE SERIES NOW!

2 years ago, this anime called Madoka blew my freaking mind.Years after Sailormoon, Magic Knight Rayearth and Cardcaptor Sakura someone finally decided to deconstruct the genre and what was created was the Watchmen of the Mahou Shoujo genre. Deconstruct meaning pulling apart all the magical girl conventions to see how they work and putting them back together in a way that had never been done before. I would like to think Madoka scared millions of Japanese girls from wishing they were Mahou Shoujos but I guess with the popularity of Pretty Cure, I don't think its happened. At the very least, this generation of parents will teach their daughters to say no to strangers and cute talking animals.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya #010: King of Magical Girls! Do you have enough swords?

Well that was slightly shorter than I expected but that might just be a case of the in effect (and not that and dance to at the end.) The original Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya was fairly short so it's probably better that they just let the series run only 10 episodes with a minimal amount of filler rather than trying to stretch 10 episodes into 13.

It reminds me of a time when people complained about filler for filler's sake and unnecessary stalling for ongoing series.Anime fans were always asking for shorter seasons and breaks between them. Now that budgets have made it that series tend to be shorter and more often cut into multiple seasons with gaps in between I see more complaining about series being shorter.

The Many Names of Symphogear

Symphogear - the show full of moon-throwing, water-walking and songs of mass destruction. There are many aspects of the show which just beg for an in-depth analysis, so forgive this blogger for being obsessed with names, of all things. But with a show where everything has many meanings, peeling off the layers is too sweet a temptation.

When we begin begin our journey with the series, we meet Amou Kanade and Kazanari Tsubasa, two young singers making up the Zwei Wing unit. With one of the duo's wings to be found in Tsubasa's first name (wing) and the other in Kanade's last name (, heavenly feather/wing), the reasoning behind the unit's name is no mystery. But we see the symbolism extend further as Tsubasa develops throughout the first season. First of all, the two wings are a symbol of unity - only together can they grant the miracle of flight. Second, flight itself represents freedom. Having lost her "better half", Tsubasa becomes the one-winged bird, chained to the prison of her guilt and past, unable to raise into the sky. And yet her other wing is still there, if only she could notice it. Kanade is, after all, the heavenly wing, supporting her partner from above even if her body is no longer there. It is no coincidence that as Tsubasa confronts her doubts for the last time during the first season, we see her falling, weakened by Fine's blows. But when Tsubasa finally overcomes her doubts, she is able to soar once more.

Just hanged out

We were planning on going to the Ramen Event in Torrance today but my friends and I heard too many negative reviews regarding the event so we decided against it.

Instead, we just hanged out in Torrance.

Helter Skelter (Fashion Unfriendly)

Now this is why I love Vertical.Publishing josei -- young women's -- manga is not yet a common occurrence in North America and what examples of it we do have trend more towards slice-of-life stories that deal with their protagonists' love lives in either a comedic or dramatic context."Helter Skelter" is a suspense-bordering-on-horror story about the unraveling of an immensely popular model's life and the people caught in the vortex of it.While the story buys itself a lot of leeway with its unique approach to the genre, it ultimately provides enough twisted thrills to overcome its flaws.

Liliko is one of the hottest models around in Japan when the story opens. Her face is everywhere promoting products and fashion, and she's about to make her acting debut in a made-for-TV movie.Underneath it all, as we find out in short order, is a vicious, petty, self-absorbed witch who is barely keeping it all together herself thanks to drugs, and the efforts of her boss "Mama" and manager Michiko. However, she also has problems underneath on a physical level as well.Liliko's beauty was the result of a very specialized procedure with some very dubious origins.Origins that are currently being investigated by one Prosecutor Asada who has quite an eye for this model.

Tekkonkinkreet [Animated Movie]

High quality animation that gets shorter every time I watch it. Based off the manga, the animated movie is a first for the American director who sparked its inception. Produced by the same studio that did TV series Berserk and Animatrix, 9 Degrees Celsius. It is a shining example on animation as an art form as it mixes hand drawn animation with computer generated animation.

Two street urchins are at the top of the food chain in Treasure Town. They are on par and at odds with the police, gangsters and the rest of the world which their town/island is isolated from. The two pseudo brothers are a great contrast to one another as one retains his childlike mindset while the other remains strong and assertive for the both of them.

The character design gives off the impression that people will either love or hate it because it is not a common style. Head shape and body type are in a style I have rarely seen. When making comparisons people can see that the animation is a great and true transition from the manga.

Berserk OVA [Animated Series]

This is one of those rare times when the anime clearly outshines the original manga. I have heard people praising the manga for its violence, graphic nature and story. However, as the manga goes past the Golden Arc (story the animated series covers) the story and art style are too erratic for me to enjoy. The original animated series is where people should start and stop. I still need to check out the movies once they complete, but I'll probably still stick with the OVA.

For me this is the best representation of medieval animation I have ever seen. One could say this is the Conan Barbarian of the anime world. Mercenaries are commonplace in the battles being fought and here we follow a quiet moody protagonist who moves through the times always in survival mode. We see him grow from his adolescence into manhood, all of it revolving around the life of a mercenary and one mercenary band in particular, Band of the Hawk.

The anime completely captures the characters and times the supernatural element perfectly. Those who enjoy a dark demonic presence that constantly shrouds the battlefield will enjoy this series. When the story goes to impact the viewer it does so like a sledge hammer. The story shows its weight gradually and builds up to very strong moments.

Gears of War

I put off getting into Gears of War because if I wanted a shooter I figured Halo should be my first choice. However, after romping through the campaign I found it to be a solid shooter experience. As a shooter I have to say it competes very well.

The areas you are stationed at have been invaded by humanoid aliens called Locusts. With a straightforward plot you are Marcus Fenix a court-marshaled soldier who is thrown into a big picture battle alongside others to take on the horde of Locusts and their heavy hitters: giant mutations/alien species and a variety of enemy classes.

Right off the bat some particular shooter mechanics in this game include: zoom w/ crosshair-shooting, hugging coverage (i.e. anything that will block a bullet: doors, walls, cars etc.) and peek-shooting. The health indicator feels natural in that it does not get in the way and also sprinting with limited endurance. You can shoot without zoom-crosshair and the accuracy is still pretty fair.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya episode 9

Just my flying and talking magical girl wand. Nothing to see here. See? I had posts nearly ready to go. XD Just need to go the final step and get the pictures. A lot of catching up to do this week. Got to focus and buckle down before the next event. So onward to Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya episode 9. You know, before the series is over and Fall Anime 2013 is upon us. Spoilers for Illya's mom bringing on the wisdom.

Way cooler than me! Episode Summary: Because this is anime it is necessary to show 11 year olds taking a bath. Thank goodness for smoke and bubbles. Illya is like this is the life. Ruby is soaking in her own tub as Illya realizes this is the first normal night she has had in a while. Ruby wonders why Illya isn't more happy. At that moment Illya's Mom (just going with mom because you know..the names) comes home. She is in a mini break from work but will go back soon since Dad is still there. Because animes are inappropriate Mom gets in the bath with Illya for some bonding and boobies rubbing to make them grow. Mom picks up on the fact that Illya seems off. Illya thinks Mom is going to guess about the magical girl stuff. Instead Mom is like um no there is a new mansion across the street? Illya is like oh yeah Miyu lives there. Illya starts talking about how a girl named Miyu moved in recently and goes to her school. She is careful how she talks about Miyu, She says that Miyu is a quiet girl who is super smart and strong. That they were friends and were working on something together. Illya really messed up though because she can't be amazing like Miyu and that Miyu would be better on her own. Mom says that everyone needs someone...sometime. That people like Miyu need people the most. That Miyu probably agreed to do this project alone not to hurt Illya or that she thinks she is better. But because she likes Illya. Illya is like thanks Mom. She runs out of the house and towards the direction of the last card, asking Ruby to transform her again.

BZRK by Michael Grant

I checked this book out from the library because I saw the sequel was available on Netgalley, and I love the Gone series by this author. The science geek in me really ended up enjoying this book. While really we get to know several of the characters throughout the book, we really have 2 central characters.First is Noah. His brother came back from the military and had gone insane. We kind of begin with Noah going to visit his brother in the mental hospital. His brother is mumbling lots of things that don't really make sense, including the word "berserk".Sadie is the other kind of main character.Although we don't really start out by meeting her, but by meeting her father and brother as they are flying to a business meeting, in Japan I think it was.On their way something happens to the plane, and it crashes in a stadium. The exact stadium that Sadie just happens to be at while she is on a date.Sadie's family is rich, in fact her father's company is heavily involved in nanotechnology. Both Sadie and Noah get recruited into the BZRK organization of hackers/nanotechnology experts to help defeat an organization called Nexus Humanus and their evil plan to take over some of the world's leaders in order to further their plans for mankind. Both sides have the same types of technology.Nanobots which can get inside and spy or at least attach the biots.Biots are nano-organisms created from actual pieces of a person, and then they become a part of that person to the point that whoever they came from can then see through their eyes and control them. The problem is this is that they are a part of you, and to lose them, well it is like a part of you actually dies, and it can drive you crazy.Just the training of going down to that tiny level can be stressful. There are all kinds of things that are freaky looking when they get that small. For example, a lot of times the biots try to get into the brain through the eyeballs, but on everyone's eyelashes are tiny creatures called Demodex. And while they are kind of frightening at the size they are compared to the biots, really they aren't dangerous at all.

Other characters are the evil twins, conjoined twins, Charles and Benjamin Armstrong who run the Nexus group. On their side is one of the best "twitchers" as the people who do this are called, and he goes by the name Bug Man.Vincent is one of the good guys, but he is an interesting character as he has an actual medical issue that he can't feel pleasure.

So we've got Noah trying to do something to make up for what happened to his brother, and Sadie who is now alone in the world, with a chance to get revenge for her brother and father. In BZRK, everyone takes a new name, Sadie chooses Plath from the basic rules given to her, and then Noah is named Keats.
Today was the first day of school,

and now I'm tired.

While intercepting the lethal strike against Miyu, Illya, Rin and Luvia came to rescue. The duo came up with a plan destructive enough to bring Berserker down with a single strike - they employed all the class cards in a single try, summoning a massive magic and having both of them wielding Saber's Excalibur. With a perfect synchronization, the team brought down Berserker, completing the mission of retrieving the seven class cards.

If you aren't reading indie-superhero hit Copra by , you really should be.The book is being touted as one of the best current ongoing series in comics by people like TIM CALLAHAN and MATT FRACTION to name just a couple of the big names who are talking about it.Putting it very simply, Copra is a riff on the Suicide-Squad/Doom Patrol outsider-superhero trope, but that description doesn't capture the psychedelic, balls-to-the-walls, multiverse-hoping, berserker awesomeness that is Copra.Fiffe self-publishes the book, working the entire operation himself.Copra is truly a one man operation; written, penciled, inked, colored, edited, published, and distributed by Fiffe himself.

Mega Man creator launches Kickstarter for Mighty No. 9

[UPDATE] Funding for Mighty No. 9 has reached over $620,000 from more than 10,000 backers fewer than 24 hours since the project went live. The campaign has until October 1 to reach its funding target of $900,000.

The original story is below.

How to correct hitting behavior by toddlers?

It has been a long time since I have last written about parenting. Nonetheless, I can assure you that life with a tiny two-year-old dictator at home keeps you constantly busy with brain-melting issues, such as how to make her understand that there is no yogurt left in the fridge (and that if you could, you would definitely create instant yogurt just to shut up her relentless whining) and that despite her good will, solely relying on her skills to empty the washer is not the most efficient process.

But a more recent concern pushes me to share about parenting tactics again, and when I say "push" I am already at the core of the problem. My daughter is tiny, but it does not restraint her from trying to attack children twice her size.

Attack on Titan, Vol. 6

BY HAJIME ISAYAMA. RELEASED IN JAPAN BY KODANSHA, SERIALIZATION ONGOING IN THE MAGAZINE BESSATSU SHONEN MAGAZINE. RELEASED IN NORTH AMERICA BY KODANSHA COMICS.

Sometimes books just read FAST. You pick up the book, start turning the pages, and the next thing you know you're looking at the preview. That's definitely the case with this volume of Attack on Titan, which is nonstop action from beginning to end, and its pace is just unrelenting. We see Armin being clever, Reiner being badass, Eren learning that being in a military organization is a hard thing for a hothead to do, and lots of mass destruction and slaughter of the survey team in general. As if the cover didn't already tip you off.

"This is Wayne's world, and y'all a bunch of tourist," Lil Wayne announces on Tha Carter IV, and can anyone disagree? In a dying music industry he managed to sell over a million copies of Tha Carter III in its debut week, and Tha Carter IV nearly matched that feat, selling 964,000 copies in its first week according to the Billboard Charts.

Coming Home to the Pleistocene

Paul Shepard (1925-1996) was a human ecologist and a turbocharged original thinker who spent his life trying to understand (a) how ordinary animals like us managed to evolve into a highly destructive swarm, and (b) how we could correct this.Genetic evolution is the primary engine of change for all forms of life, except humans. With humans, history and culture have changed us far more, and much faster.

Shepard's research came to conclusions that did not thrill the stodgy professors of mainstream academia. He was more or less dismissed as a nutjob. Most of his fame came after he died, when a new generation of fresh minds discovered an underappreciated genius. His masterpiece, Coming Home to the Pleistocene, summed up the scholarly pilgrimage of his life.He wrote it as cancer was drawing the curtains on his .

2020 Summer Olympics will be hosted by Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo, Japan is currently celebrating because the IOC announced that they will host the 2020 Summer Olympics. I gotta say a 'Congratulations' to Tokyo because they will host an Olympic game for the second time. They first hosted the Summer Olympics during 1964. Now, I don't want to talk much but I'll show you an article from Rupert Wingfield-Hayes of BBC News, Tokyo about Tokyo's celebration on the announcement:"For months journalists like me have been speculating on whether Tokyoites are really that enthusiastic about getting the Olympics. Well today we got our answer. As the announcement came through from Buenos Aires, venues across the city burst into uproar. I was at the Komozawa Gymnasium in the west of the city where a couple of thousand Olympic enthusiasts had stayed up all night. Japanese people are, by nature, quite reticent, but not this morning. As Jacques Rogge read out the name of the winning city they went berserk, jumping and shouting, crying and laughing. A few hours later, standing in the rain in Shibuya, the city's busiest shopping district, I questioned early morning shoppers coming out of the train station. The ecstasy may have been more subdued, but the sentiment was the same. Hard as I tried I couldn't find anyone who thought it was a bad idea. So much for my journalistic cynicism. Economists say Tokyoites have good reason to be cheerful. There's a lot of building to be done, and a lot of money to be spent. Like any Olympics, the centrepiece will be an extravagant stadium. Tokyo's has been designed by British architect Zaha Hadid. Its futuristic curves fit nicely with Tokyo's Olympic slogan: "Discover Tomorrow." But it comes at a huge price: more than $1.5bn. That is just a small part of the $8bn that will be spent on refurbishing old stadiums and building new ones. So it's all good news for Japan's construction companies, who have long been suckled on the teat of government spending. But all this money going it to Tokyo may be less good news for other parts of the country, particularly the Tsunami ravaged north-east coast. In many areas re-construction has still barely begun. And then there are the people of Fukushima. A friend of mine who was born there could hardly contain her fury this week when she heard Japan's Olympic committee chief Tsunekazu Takeda reassuring the IOC about Fukushima. "Fukushima is a long way away," he said. "It is no threat to Tokyo." "No threat to Tokyo maybe," my friend said. "But what about the people who live in Fukushima?" About 100,000 people are still unable to go home because of the nuclear disaster that struck the Fukushima Daiichi plant more than two-and-a-half years ago. Many feel that the rest of Japan is already forgetting about them, and that the Japanese government only cares about getting the other nuclear power plants back on line. If there is one positive thing for the people of Fukushima to come from the Olympic decision, it is that the world is now watching even more closely to see what goes on there. The Japanese government has seven years to contain and neutralise the disaster properly."(Source: BBC News Asia)

Off Topic: My Favorite Video Games Part 8 Top Ten Most Wanted Newcomers for Smash 4!

With Smash Bros getting the fourth game in the franchise, how can I not be excited. I was a big fan of Smash Bros ever since the N64 days. That game got me very interested in the Nintendo characters when I was little and the sequels helped me to find more games. Like how Melee made me discover Fire Emblem and then Brawl showing Pit and getting me interested in his old games and then I got really excited for the reboot of the Kid Icarus franchise. Overall Smash Bros is a great franchise that has shown the greatness that is video game history and thanks to third party characters like Sonic, Snake, and Megaman that is a very strong point to make. So with that I want to make a list of the newcomers I want the most. I will try to be realistic here so it just won't be the characters I want, but characters I can see being playable. Also this is a nice little break from my Wizard rush I am having right now. So let's begin!

10. Ashley (WarioWare)The WarioWare series is a really bizarre one. It's just full of random mini-games and that somehow is a lot of fun. With Wario being in Brawl and easily being a representative of WarioWare, a new character should join him. I do know about Wario World, but Wario has become something different and I am fine with that. So with Ashley, she is a magic user and with her little devil partner that could make an interesting move set. She is easily the fan favorite of WarioWare so having her wouldn't be a bad move. Finally, I really love the song she has in Brawl (Japanese version).9. Prince Fluff (Kirby)The Kirby franchise belongs to Sakurai who has made Smash Bros since the beginning. In Brawl he put two Kirby characters to be newcomers so I can see Kirby getting another character. People say it should be Bandana Dee, but that is just a Waddle Dee and that is the Goomba of the Kirby universe. Also Fluff easily has more uniqueness towards him. First is the yarn animation, I would love to see that animation done for Smash Bros and then seeing Kirby be Yarn Kirby would be amazingly cute. With Fluff he can easily have moves based on the string he uses. Also his moves can be full of the forms he transforms into along with Kirby in the game. Then a great final smash would be the tank form as he punches and fire rockets everywhere! If Fluff doesn't get in, at least there should be an Epic Yarn stage because I love that yarn animation!

8. Chrom and Robin (Fire Emblem)A big debate is with the new Fire Emblem characters. The franchise had a really big boom thanks to Awakening so I wouldn't doubt they would put a character in the game. The debate is with Chrom and Robin as they are both the main characters, but which one deserves it the most? I say why not both? Awakening had a huge support system and had dual linking in the game so why not work that in for Smash Bros. It would easily be a big change for Fire Emblem characters. The Smash moves can easily be Chrom with his sword and Robin can use his/her magic for the special moves. For the Final Smash I can see an Aether and Ignis combo. Personally I would like Robin more because of his/her swordplay along with magic would be very good for a moveset, but Chrom is a big character as well so I would love to both of them fight along side each other.

Week Four Blog Post

This weeks lecture for BCM240 focused on the 'Emergence of the television culture'. We were required to ask someone older than you in your family or community to share a story with us about watching television, and the spaces in which this occurred. I chose to interview my mother, as she always wistfully reminisces about the time her father bought home their first television set.

My mother was ten years old when the family bought their first tv, however not everyone in the family was as thrilled as she and her siblings were. My mother recalls her mother being infuriated when her husband carried the set into the lounge room. Here was this hugely extravagant machine when she didn't even have a washing mashine yet!

Berserker

TODAY I AM GOING TO WRITE ABOUT BERSERKERS THEY WERE NOT MYTHICAL THEY WERE REAL BUT THERE ARE SOME TALES ABOUT THEM THAT MAY SEEM MYTHICAL. SO LETS GET TO IT. BERSERKERS (OR BERSERKERS) WERE GERMANIC WARRIORS WHO ARE PRIMARILY REPORTED IN THE OLD NORSE LITERATURE TO HAVE FOUGHT IN A NEARLY UNCONTROLLABLE, TRANCE-LIKE FURY, A CHARACTERISTIC WHICH LATER GAVE RISE TO THE ENGLISH WORD BERSERK. BERSERKERS ARE ATTESTED TO IN NUMEROUS OLD NORSE SOURCES. MOST HISTORIANS BELIEVE THAT BERSERKERS WORKED THEMSELVES INTO A RAGE BEFORE BATTLE, BUT SOME THINK THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE CONSUMED DRUGGED FOODS. THELFHNAR (SINGULAR LFHE INN) ANOTHER TERM ASSOCIATED WITH BERSERKERS, MENTIONED IN THE , AND THE WERE SAID TO WEAR THE PELT OF A WOLF WHEN THEY WHEN THEY ENTERED BATTLE. LFHNAR ARE SOMETIMES DESCRIBED AS ODIN'S SPECIAL WARRIORS: "[ODIN'S] MEN WENT WITHOUT THEIR MAILCOATS AND WERE MAD AS HOUNDS OR WOLVES, BIT THEIR SHIELDS...THEY SLEW MEN, BUT NEITHER FIRE NOR IRON HAD EFFECT UPON THEM. THIS CALLED 'GOING BERSERK."IN ADDITION, THE HELM-PLATE PRESS FROM TORSLUNDA DEPICTS A SCENE OF ODIN WITH A BERSERKER- "A WOLF SKINNED WARRIOR WITH THE DANCER IN THE BIRD-HORNED HELM, WHICH IS GENERALLY INTERPERTED AS SHOWING A SCENE INDICATIVE OF A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BERSERKGANG...AND THE GOD ODIN"- WITH A WOLF PELT AND A SPEAR AS DISTINGUISHING FEATURES. THE NAME BERSERKER DERIVES FROM THE OLD NORSE BERSERKR (PLURAL BERSERKIR). THIS EXPRESSION MOSTLY LIKELY AROSE FROM THEIR REPUTED HABIT OF WEARING A KIND OF SHIRT OF COAT (SERKR) MADE FROM THE PELT OF A BEAR (BER-) DURING BATTLE. THE ELEMENT BER- WAS SOMETIMES INTERPRETED AS BERR- MEANING "BARE" WHICH SNORRI UNDERSTOOD TO MEAN THAT THE WARRIORS WENT INTO BATTLE BARE-CHESTED, OR "WITHOUT ARMOR" AS MEN OF ODIN. THIS VIEW HAS SINCE BEEN LARGELY ABANDONED. TO "GO BERSERK" WAS TO "HAMASK" WHICH TRANSLATES AS "CHANGE FORM" IN THIS CASE, A WITH THE SENSE "ENTER A STATE OF WILD FURY" AND ONE WHO COULD TRANSFORM AS A BERSERKER WAS TYPICALLY THOUGHT OF AS "HAMRAMMR" OR "SHAPESTRONG." FOR EXAMPLE, THE BAND OF MEN THAT GO WITH SKALLAGRIM IN EGIL'S SAGA TO SEE KING HARALD ABOUT HIS BROTHER, THORILF'S MURDER, THEY ARE DESCRIBED AS, "ALL TOGETHER THERE WERE TWELVE OF THEM IN THE PARTY, ALL THE HARDEST OF MEN, WITH A TOUCH OF THE UNCANNY ABOUT A NUMBER OF THEM... THEY [WERE] BUILT AND SHAPED MORE LIKE TROLLS THAN HUMAN BEINGS," WHICH IS GENERALLY INTERPRETED AS THIS BAND OF MEN BEING HAMRAMMR. BERSERKERS APPEAR PROMINENTLY IN A MULTITUDE OF OTHER SAGAS AND POEMS, MANY OF WHICH DESCRIBE BERSERKERS AS RAVENOUS MEN WHO LOOT, PLUNDER, AND KILL INDISCRIMINATELY. LATER, BY CHRISTIAN INTERPRETER, THE BERSERK WAS EVEN VIEWED AS A "HEATHEN DEVIL." THE EARLIEST SURVIVING REFERENCE TO THE TERM "BERSERKER" IS IN HARALDSKEIO A SKALDIC POEM COMPOSED BY THORBION HORNLOFI IN THE LATE 9TH CENTURY IN HONOUR OF KING HARALD FAIRHAIR, AS ULFHE NAR ("MEN CLAD IN WOLD SKINS"). THIS TRANSLATION FROM THE HARALDSKVI ASAGA DESCRIBES HARALD'S BERSERKERS: I'LL ASK THE BERSERKS, YOU TASTERS OF BLOOD, THOSE INTREPID HEROES, HOW THEY TREATED, THOSE WHO WADE OUT INTO BATTLE? WOLF-SKINNED THEY ARE CALLED. IN BATTLE THEY BEAR BLOODY SHIELDS. RED WITH BLOOD ARE THEIR SPEARS WHEN THEY COME TO FIGHT. THEY FORM A CLOSED GROUP. THE PRINCE HIS WISDOM PUTS TRUST IN SUCH MEN WHO HACK THROUGH ENEMY SHIELDS. THE ICELANDIC HISTORIAN AND POET SNORRI STURLUSON (1179-1241) WROTE THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION OF BERSERKERS IN HIS YNLINGA SAGA: HIS (ODIN'S) MEN RUSHED FORWARDS WITHOUT ARMOR, WERE AS MAD AS DOGS OR WOLVES, BIT THEIR SHIELDS, AND WERE STRONG AS BEARS OR WILD OXEN, AND KILLED PEOPLE AT A BLOW, BUT NEITHER FIRE NOR IRON TOLD UPON THEM. THIS WAS CALLED BERSERKERGANG. KING HARLAD FAIRHAIR'S USE OF BERSERKER "SHOCK TROOPS" BROADENED HIS SPHERE OF INFLUENCE. OTHER SCANDINAVIAN KINGS USED BERSERKERS AS PART OF THEIR ARMY OF HIRDMEN AND SOMETIMES RANKED THEM AS EQUIVALENT TO A ROYAL BODYGUARD. IT MAY BE THAT SOME OF THOSE WARRIORS ONLY ADOPTED THE ORGANIZATION OT RITUALS OF BERSERKER MANNERBUNDE, OR USED THE NAME AS A DETERRENT OR CLAIM OF THEIR FEROCITY. EMPHASIS HAS BEEN PLACED ON THE FRENIED NATURE OF THE BERSERKERS HENCE THE MODERN SENSE OF THE WORD 'BERSERK.' HOWEVER, THE SOURCE DESCRIBES SEVERAL OTHER CHARACTERISTICS THAT HAVE BEEN IDNORED OR NEGLECTED BY MODERN COMMENTATORS. SNORRI'S ASSERTION THAT 'NEITHER FIRE NOR IRON TOLD UPON THM' IS REITERATED TIME AFTER TIME, AND THE SOURCES FREQUENTLY STATE THAT NEITHER EDGED WEAPONS NOR FIRE AFFECTED THE BERSERKS, ALTHOUGH THEY WERE NOT IMMUNE TO CLUBS OR OTHER BLUNT INSTRUMENTS. FOR EXAMPLE: MEN ASKED HALFDAN TO ATTACK HARBEEN AND HIS CHAMPIONS MAN BY MAN; AND HE NOT ONLY PROMISED TO FIGHT, BUT ASSURED HIMSELF THE VICTORY WITH MOST CONFIDENT WORDS. WHEN HARDEEN HEARD THIS, A DEMONICAL FRENZY SUDDENLY TOOK HIM; HE FURIOUSLY BIT AND DEVOURED THE EDGES OF HIS SHIELD; HE KEPT GULPING DOWN FIERY COALS; HE SNATCHED LIVE EMBERS IN HIS MOUTH AND LET THEM PASS DOWN INTO HIS ENTRAILS; HE RUSHED THROUGH THE PERILS OF CRACKLING FIRES; AND AT LAST, WHEN HE HAD RAVED THROUGH EVERY SORT OF MADNESS HE TURNED HIS SWORD WITH RAGAING HAND AGAINST THE HEARTS OF SIX OF HIS CHAMPIONS. IT IS DOUBTFUL WHETHER THIS MADNESS CAME FROM THIRST FOR BATTLE OR NATURAL FEROCITY. THE WITHTHE REMAINING BAND OF HIS CHAMPIONS. IT IS DOUBTFUL WHETHER THIS MADNESS CAME FROM THIRST FOR BATTLE OR NATURAL FEROCITY. THEN WITH THE REMAINING BAND OF HIS CHAMPIONS HE ATTACKED HALFDAN, WHO CRUSHED HIM WITH A HAMMER OR WONDROUS SIZE, SO THAT HE LOST BOTH VICTORY AND LIFE; PAYING THE PENALTY BOTH TO HALFDAN, WHOM HE HAD CHALLENGED, AND TO THE KINGS WHOSE OFFSPRING HE HAD VIOLENTLY RAVISHED... SIMILARLY, HROLF KRAKI'S CHAMPIONS REFUSE TO RETREAT 'FROM FIRE OR IRON.' ANOTHER FREQUENT MOTIF REFERS TO BERSERKRS BLUNTING THEIR ENEMY'S BLADES WITH SPELLS, OR A GLANCE FROM THEIR EVIL EYES. THIS APPEARS AS EARLY AS BEWOWULF WHERE IT IS A CHARACTERISTIC ATTRIBUTED TO GRENDEL. BOTH THE FIRE EATING AND THE IMMUNITY TO EDGED WEAPONS ARE REMINISCENT OF TRICKS POPULARLY ASCRIBED TO HINDU FAKIRS. IN 1015, JARL EIRIKR HAKONARSON OF NORWAY OUTLAWED BERSERKERS, GRAGAS, THE MEDIEVAL ICELANDIC LAW CODE, SCENTED BERSERKER WARRIORS TO OUTLAW, BY THE 12TH CENTURY, ORGANISED BERSERKER WAR BANDS HAD DISAPPEARED. THE LEWIS CHESSMEN FOUND ON THE ISLE OF LEWIS (OUTER HEBRIDES, SCOTLAND) BUT THOUGHT TO BE OF NORSE MANUFACTURE, INCLUDE BERSERKERS DEPICTED BITING THEIR SHIELDS. SCHOLAR HILDA ELLIS-DAVIDSON DRAWS APARALLEL BETWEEN BERSERKERS AND THE MENTION BY THE BYZANTINE EMPEROR CONSTANTINE VII (AD 905-959) IN HIS BOOK DE CERIMONIIS AULAE BYZANTINAE ("BOOK OF CEREMONIES OF THE BYZANTINE COURT") OF A "GOTHIC DANCE"PERFORMED BY MEMBERS OF HIS VARANGIAN GUARD (NORSE WARRIORS WORKING IN THE SERVICE OF THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE) WHO TOOK PART WEARING ANIMAL SKINS AND MASKS: SHE BELIEVES THIS MAY HAVE BEEN CONNECTED WITH BERSERKER RITES. THE ACTUAL FIT OF MADNESS THE BERSERKER EXPERIENCED WAS REFERRER TO AS BERSERKERGANG ("GOING BERSERK") THIS CONDITION HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS FOLLOWS: THIS FURY, WHICH WAS CALLED BERSERKERGANG, OCCURRED NOT ONLY IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE, BUT ALSO DURING LABORIOUS WORK. MEN WHO WERE SEIZED PERFORMED THINGS WHICH OTHERWISE SEEMED IMPOSSIBLE FOR HUMAN POWER. THIS CONDITION IS SAID TO HAVE BEGUN WITH SHIVERING, CHATTERING OF THE TEETH, AND CHILL IN THE BODY, AND THEN THE FACE SWELLED AND CHANGED ITS COLOUR. WITH THIS WAS CONNECTED A GREAT HOT-HEADEDNESS, WHICH AT LAST GAVE OVER INTO A GREAT RAGE, UNDER WHICH THEY HOWLED AS WILD ANIMALS, BIT THE EDGE OF THEIR SHIELDS; AND CUT DOWN EVERYTHING THEY MET WITHOUT DISCRIMINATING BETWEEN FRIEND OR FOE. WHEN THIS CONDITION CEASED, A GREAT DULLING OF THE MIND AND FEEBLENESS FOLLOWED, WHICH COULD LAST FOR ONE OR SEVERAL DAYS. THEORIES ABOUT WHAT CAUSED BERSERKER BEHAVIOR INCLUDE INGESTION OF MATERIALS WITH PSYCHOACTIVE PROPERTIES, PSYCHOLOGICAL PROCESSES, AND MEDICAL CONDITIONS. SOME SCHOLARS BELIEVE CERTAIN EXAMPLES OF BERSERKER RAGE TO HAVE BEEN INDUCED VOLUNTARILY BY THE CONSUMPTION OF DRUGS SUCH AS THE HALLUCINOGENIC MUSHROOM AMANITA MUSCARIA OR MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF ALCOHOL. WHILE SUCH PRACTICES WOULD FIT IN WITH RITUAL USAGES, OTHER EXPLANATIONS FOR THE BERSERKER'S MADNESS HAVE BEEN PUT FORWARD, INCLUDING SELF-INDUCED HYSTERIA, EPILEPSY, MENTAL ILLNESS OR GENETICS. JONATHAN SHAY MD, MAKES AN EXPLICIT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE BERSERKER RANGE OF SOLDIERS AND THE HYPERAROUSAL OF POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER. IN ACHILLES IN VIETNAM HE WRITES: IF A SOLDIER SURVIVES THE BERSERK STATE, IT IMPARTS EMOTIONAL DEADNESS AND VULNERABILITY TO EXPLOSIVE RAGE TO HIS PSYCHOLOGY AND PERMANENT HYPERAROUSAL TO HIS PHYSIOLOGY- HALLMARKS OF POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER IN COMBAT VETERANS. MY CLINICAL EXPERIENCE WITH VIETNAM COMBAT VETRANS PROMPTS ME TO PLACE THE BERSERK STATE AT THE HEART OF THEIR MOST SEVERE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYCHOPHYIOGICAL INJURIES. THE WORD "BERSERKER" TODAY APPLIES TO ANYONE WHO FIGHTS WITH RECKLESS ABANDON AND DISREGARD TO EVEN HIS OWN LIFE, A CONCEPT USED DURING THE VIETNAM WAR AND IN VIETNAM0INSPIRED LITRATURE (MICHAEL HERR'S DISPATCHES) AND FILM (OLIVER STONE'S PLATOON AND ADRIAN LYNE'S JACOB'S LADDER). "GOING BERSERK" IN THIS CONTEXT REFERS TO AN OVERDOSE OF ADRENALINE-INDUCED OPIOIDS (OR MILITARY-ISSUED AMPHETAMINE FOR LONG MISSIONS) IN THE HUMAN BODY AND BRAIN LEADING A SOLIDER TO FIGHT WITH FEARLESS RAGE AND INDIFFERENCE, A STATE STRIKINGLY SIMILAR TO THAT OF THE 9TH CENTURY BERSERKERS. "GOING BERSERK" IS ALSO USED COLLOQUIALLY TO DESCRIBE A PERSON WHO IS ACTING IN A WILD RAGE OR IN AN UNCONTROLLED AND IRRATIONAL MANNER. "BERSERKER" IS ALSO A WELL KNOWN CHARACTER ARCHTYPE AND STATUS IN VIDEO GAMED AND OTHER MEDIA. I HOPE THAT YOU ENJOYED THIS POST ON BERSERKERS AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE THEN YOU CAN GO TO HTTP://EN.WIKIPEDIA.ORG/WIKI/BERSERKER ALSO IF YOU LIKED THIS POST THEN PLEASE FOLLOW MY BLOG AND FEEL FREE TO SHARE THIS BLOG WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY. Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya #009: Mother & Daughter Skinship

It is time for the return of the Queen. (Which once again makes me think of . Making this the she has come up in a Fate/kaleid review post. You think I would be making more references.) If anyone is going to get this show back on track it is none other than . Now that she is not dying of magical anime disease (Holy Grail version) she can finally flex those full motherly muscles like she was always meant to. But at the same time gets to show off some solo fighting ability. So there is more to this episode than bath time fun. I know some people are saddened with that news. Hopefully they do not read this blog and instead just stick to Sankaku Complex or something equally vile.

I had to download a raw video just to get a good shot of that darn bathroom door because for some reason it had a huge "This is your exclusive stream announcement" on . Normally I am never that bothered by that little announcement but when your trying to get screen shots it is amazingly annoying. The little Crunchyroll water mark in the corner is never as bad (I have left it in on other screencaps) but this is just silly. That is enough "Al talks about minor details of blogging" information. On to the summary.

50 Great Series Finales

Every great story needs a great ending. A story should not keep going and going and going like the Energizer Bunny: it has to have a stopping point. A conclusion. Even the most open-ended endings possible are acceptable if they're done right. The quality of an ending can make or break how a story is perceived and remembered. TV series' do not always tell stories. They can be episodic or plotted and serialized depending on the content. But like stories, great TV shows should have great finales. Something to really cap off the experience and prove that it was all worthwhile. So in this entry, I've selected 50 TV shows I've seen that I feel had particularly great series finales. Most of them are animated 'cause I have not caught up with all the live action TV shows of my time yet. Please keep in mind that this is for TV series', not movies, books, or video games. Those are a similar but different matter. Without further delay, I'll cover 50 great series finales of my (mostly animated) TV experience!

Winnie The Pooh And Christmas Too (The New Adventures Of Pooh) - This show did the whole "ending on a Christmas special" thing better than "The Care Bears Family" did. This actually feels like a special episode of the series and was a worthy cap-off to a fun show.

Japan Expo USA 2013

Wow, it has been a long time since I updated! The month of August went by really fast for me. I was so busy working on finishing my costumes for Japan Expo USA. This was the first year the expo was held in the US, at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

I didn't get many photos this time, but here they are!

Katrina Kaif avoiding Ranbir Kapoor ?

Top Bollywood stars and now -a- days are making top stories of all show biz magazines and papers. They were spotted in Spain having an awesome time, enjoying themselves and all. First there were talks about how could Katrina Kaif NOT be upset over her holiday pictures being leaked? And then when she was finally pissed, the media went berserk as to why she was so angry?

Anyway after few weeks the photos weren't so hot and neither was anyone's temper flaring. We all allegedly knew that the couple is secretly dating and are often spotted entering or exiting the others house. But what's the recent development on their rumoured and alleged relationship? British beauty, Kats is avoiding our Indian Casanova.

Mesutzil: Is he the answer?

Now that the ruckus has subsided and the dust has settled over what has turned out to be one of the most exhilarating, if not the most exhilarating, transfer window seen in recent memory, with transfer records been shattered, left right and center, with clubs going all out on spending sprees (Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Real Madrid, of course, springing into mind), others going all out to trim the fat off their squads and purge the dead-weight from their ranks (Arsenal, being a prime example, releasing 23 youth players and Chelsea as well sending out 6 of their squad members out on loan to one club), while for others, it has been a time to sit back, reassess and evaluate exactly what went wrong during this transfer window (cue in Manchester United). However, despite all the happenings of the transfer market, all football fans can agree that this was definitely a transfer window never seen before. Gareth Bale broke the transfer record set by his fellow Galactico Cristiano Ronaldo when he signed for Madrid for an exorbitant price of EUR85.3 million. However, contrary to popular belief, his transfer was not the transfer of the season. That honor, however, goes to the one and only: MesutzilNow this might seem a bit odd or controversial. After all, Gareth Bale is THE MOST EXPENSIVE PLAYER! And he cost double of what Arsenal forked out forzil. However, I believe thatzil is twice the player for half the price. Here are some statistics as to why....

And for the record, zil jerseys are outselling Bale jerseys 5:1.....'nuf said! Now let's move on to other more important matters.

The Anime Music Tournament 2013 Bracket Jigglypuff

Given the nature of the Pokemon, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a sleep-inducing bracket on initial glance. Thankfully, this is not the case, as the here keep things lively in a good way.

BJR1P1

An Anticlimactic Antichrist

I wonder if this is an appropriate juncture at which to repeat the anecdote about my TV exploding on Christmas night a few years ago? I've mentioned it before, but basically, what happened was this: the tube went bang and we had to spend the next few days watching a portable set. This would not be particularly noteworthy were it not for the fact that I was watching The Omen at the time (we had got to the graveyard sequence), despite the disapproval of some of the more devout members of my family. (I still think showing The Omen on Christmas night has a touch of crazy inspiration about it. Hey ho.)

Anyway - and skip on if you've heard this one before - the next day one of these more zealous relatives sidled up to me with the air of someone doing something of import.

Skylanders Punch Pop Fizz Figure

Everyone knows that Chester likes Skylanders, in fact he loves them. A lot. I think the look on his face when he opened up a parcel to find Punch Pop Fizz says it all....

For those of you that may of let this craze go over your head, Skylanders is a video game. In short, you have a special portal of power, which connects to your game console. Then when you place a Skylander figure (these are purchased separately) onto your portal it comes alive on the game. Making the game very exciting and different everytime.

I MIGHT start my next project this week

I completely knocked out yesterday when I was thinking of what to write for my blog. So I'll briefly write what happened yesterday and today.

Yesterday, I was helping out my friend look for old VHS tapes and his Beast Wars toys that were in his garage. After some heavy lifting and searching, we found 10 boxes that might contain what we were looking for.

Determinators

Determinators are something I love, and knowing that I love it had allowed me to understand why I love some of the media, some of the stories, some of the characters that I do.

Let us begin with the definition of determinator :

TV Recap: The Secret World of Alex Mack "The Test"

One of my favorite online pastimes is reading recaps of TV shows, movies, and books- . I have only written a few recaps in my life, and once I did it, I discovered that it is actually a fun outlet for creativity. Beyond summarizing a book, TV show, or movie, recapping requires actively viewing or reading the piece and then providing your own unique commentary about the contents. Every recap is different, reflecting the views and sense of humor in each recapper. That is why I find them fascinating. Thus, I have decided to implement them into this blog.

A quick word of caution: recapping is incredibly time-consuming. I will try to post as many recaps as I can, but trust me, this will take some time to complete. So don't expect one every day or anything- for crying out loud, I have a day job.

Masters of the Dead

So by the time you read this, most of the pre-ordered copies of Scream Factory's new DAY OF THE DEAD release will likely be in-route. From the start I was skeptical of their promise of a "New 35mm Film Transfer", since... well, for one thing I'm a paranoid twat, and the last time I remember someone promising me 'New HD Masters' and 'Straight From Film' was Media Blasters (on ICHI THE KILLER and BERSERK REMASTERED respectively), and by now, we all know how well that turned out.

I don't have the Scream Factory disc yet, and the comparisons we've seen thus far have been pretty minimal... to whit, I'm going to repost the most interesting A/B shot that's surfaced yet. These were taken by Tyler Foster, who has since posted his full review on for the disc in question, though these caps were actually made as part of a on the Blu-ray.com forum between him, myself, and several other Romero fanboys:

Jack has a big face

James arrived home from his holiday in Austria very late on Sunday evening, and has had lots to tell us about his hill-walking. He keeps telling me how much I would enjoy going with him on a similar holiday, but then he mentions that he did 6000 metres of ascent over the week, which does not sound inviting to me! He has really enjoyed his holiday.

Although Jack has been fine in himself since his fight last week, we noticed over the last couple of days that the right hand side of his face has swollen up and under his fur there is a large lump. So I made an appointment at the vet's and I was glad that I had because by the time I got home from work the lump was so big that his right eye was half closed! James had arrived home just before me so he came with me to the vet's while David made the dinner.

Jack was not a happy cat when we got there and even less so when the vet stuck a large needle into the lump to try to draw out any liquid. This was unsuccessful so Jack had to get an anti-inflammatory injection and an antibiotic injection. During the second injection he went berserk and lashed out with claws and teeth at the vet and at James, who was holding him. He scratched the back of James' hand really badly! He also yowled and lashed out when the vet put some ear drops in his ears - I suspect that he is getting a bit deaf so she was seeing if he has earwax. This was all too much for Jack, what a racket he made! James said fondly to him, "You were looking forward to a nice quiet evening weren't you?", however the vet thought that James was talking to her and said, "Yes I was!" which I thought was very funny. Jack gave the vet an absolutely filthy look.

Evolution vs. Revolution: A Tale of Two Anime Conventions

I have a first world problem: all my friends went to PAX, and I didn't.

Unfortunately, this year, my favorite convention fell on the same weekend as my mother's 75th birthday, so I decided early on to give it a miss. Naturally, this was a signal for all of the colleagues and friends I've made at past GDCs and industry events to make this the year they went to PAX, so not only did I miss out on seeing them again, but my Twitter feed was pretty much pure PAX joy that I didn't get to partake in. Luckily, , so somehow, I will live.

Miami Heat's Lebron James Named Si's Sportsman Of The Year

LEBRON JAMES LEANS ON EXPERIENCE TO GUIDE HEAT IN GAME 3

When James lost in the Finals in 2007, with the Cavaliers, he remade his jump shot. When he fell again in 2011, with the Heat, he built a post game. James was born with supernatural ability, but he lets none of it lie dormant. He extracts every ounce, through a distillation process created and refined by failure. "The game is a house, and some players only have one or two windows in their house because they can't absorb any more light," says Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of Team USA. "When I met LeBron, he only had a few windows, but then he learned how beautiful the game can be, so he put more windows in. Now he sees the damn game so well, it's like he lives in a glass building. He has entered a state of mastery. There's nothing he can't do.

Benedict Cumberbatch Cast in STAR WARS EPISODE 7?

With the rumor mill swirling about STAR WARS EPISODE 7, the next installment of the legendary franchise directed by J.J. Abrams, many have been left wondering who could fit within that esteemed universe.Late last week, it was reported that a casting announcement for the project was imminent, and for most of the last weekend social media went berserk with die-hard fans prodding bloggers for scoops.According to the folks over at Film Chronicle, that announcement will be quite soon - and they already know who it is.

The site claims that fan-favorite actor Benedict Cumberbatch (STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY) has been cast in an unspecified role for STAR WARS EPISODE 7.Cumberbatch has expressed interest in appearing in the franchise in the past, and this announcement would make sense. He's worked with Abrams before, and was an otherwise bright spot in a relatively dismal film - although it didn't hurt STAR TREK at all.

Mega Man's Creator Turns To Kickstarter To Fuel His New Game (Which Looks A Whole Lot Like Mega Man)

It's becoming almost formulaic at this point: An iconic game designer, backed by a legion of dedicated fans, turns to Kickstarter to allow them to break out on their own. See: (Monkey Island, Grim Fandango), who raised over $3M for his studio, DoubleFine, or (Earthworm Jim), who raised just shy of $1M to build a spiritural successor to his earlier game, The Neverhood.

The latest gaming giant to turn to the crowd is Keiji Inafune, creator of one of gaming's most classic icons, Mega Man. In news that probably comes to many of his fan's delight (but presumably not his former bosses), his new game looks and sounds a whole lot like Mega Man.

Friday

This past week was a little bit of going off the rails week.

I've not gone to the gym for a week or so because I developed tennis elbow from using my weed whacker when I went berserk at the garden. It had the audacity to have grown in all places rather splendidly while I was untangling my life from the other ("other" as in O).So, I went at it with far too much determination and my right arm paid the price. The gym had to wait.

Scotland Loves Animation 2013 Festival Line-Up

On the day that , I report about this year's takes place in GLASGOW (OCTOBER 11TH-13TH) and EDINBURGH (OCTOBER 14TH-20TH). If the former bit of news is sad for the loss tat the film and anime world will suffer then the line-up offers positivity because these titles have so much imagination and originality that, even with the Miyazaki-sized hole in anime, great works will still be made.

The line-up features a lot of the biggest anime films released in Japan over the last two years. There are some genuinely lovely surprises like Fuse: A Gun Girl's Detective Story, Garden of Words, and Gusko Budori and some great surprises like Hal and Patema Inverted. Some of these films already have UK distribution deals and some are classics that are getting re-released.
