Rewind: Berserk

I've debated featuring Berserk for several weeks now. Each time, I backed down before I could even type the title. Why? If I'm completely honest with myself, I realize it's shame. I watched something I shouldn't have.

Now, don't get me wrong: I'm not saying that I shouldn't have watched Berserk just because I'm a Christian. Yes, it's explicit, but sometimes, truths can be shown better in something rated TV-MA than TV-G. Nor am I passing any other sort of judgement on Berserk, good or bad... partially because it's been too long since I watched it. I'm just relating my experience, take it or leave it.

(Philippines) Most Notable Anime in the 90's

Akazukin Cha Cha (ABS-CBN)The Little Red Riding Hood-inspired anime. Cha Cha was I think the funniest anime broadcasted by ABS-CBN in the 90 s. All of the characters has their own comedic persona, and you won't get tired watching them again and again. The common debate me and my friends had in this show was: "Who will Cha Cha going to end up with - Riiya or Shiine?"I also have a friend who's very addicted to this, and wellI can't forget her insane laugh when we watched the OAV in our school auditorium when we had an Anime Film Showing in our school foundation day.Ang Mahiwagang Kuwintas (ABS-CBN)Nadia - Secret of Blue Water, its original title, was Gainax's Ghibli-like adventure anime. I remember regretting not being able to watch the last episode of this anime (just like when I missed the last episode of Slayers). This show was a worldwide hit, not only in the Philippines.BT'X / B'tX (ABS-CBN)"Messiah Fist" - the cybernetic gauntlet weapon by the main character - Teppei - and the least character I like. The coolest for me is Fou Lafine, he plays his violin when he attacksthough I don't have any idea where he hides it. On the other hand, I prefer Hokuto's B'T - B'T Max (a turtle mecha) over the rest. It's just so gigantic, almost looks indestructible. About the anime, this was pretty much popular, especially its Tagalog opening song.Cedie, Ang Munting Prinsipe (ABS-CBN)Based on the novel "The Little Lord Fauntleroy", this anime was broadcasted at the same time with Peter Pan and Princess Sarah, around 1992-1993 (I was about 4-5 years old at that time). This World Masterpiece Theatre member was such a hit that ABS-CBN's Star Cinema made a live action version in 1996 starring Tom Taus.Gundam Wing (GMA)The only mecha-anime hit by GMA in the 90 s. Its successor Gundam G didn't come up to the level like Wing did, in short it flopped. About the anime, Wing's pilot and main character - Heero Yuy is a typical-snob guy. Though most of the girls I know like the fact that he's a snob, 'cause they like it everytime he ignores Relena. Moving onthe two characters I like the most were Quatre and Trowa - I mimicked his hairstyle back when I was in 5th grade (I didn't think my classmates would notice it, but they did. Just shows that this Gundam series was really popular.) And the two coolest mobile suits for me were Gundam Deathscythe Hell Custom (Duo's Gundam) and Gundam Nataku (Wufei's Gundam). Obviously, I'm not a fan of the main character, like in B'tX.

Huckleberry Finn (ABS-CBN)This adventure novel-based anime is a remake of the 1976 Huckleberry no Bouken. There's one episode that I couldn't forget, it's when Huck and his father were only eating (hot) sweet potatoes for days. I imagined myself being in that situation, and I realized it's really a huge challenge (OK, now I'm hungry). This anime was broadcasted in 1997, at the same time its somehow related anime - (The) Adventures of Tom Sawyer was released.Let's & Go (GMA)A Sports genre anime about kids (and some adults) and their mini Four-wheel drives. The proof that this show was a hit, was when the competition came to life. Actual toy cars from the anime were sold in stores, and different tournaments were held around the country (even in our school). At first I thought the toys were 100% similar to the anime, like there's some booster or spinning blades on the wheels - but no, what you can see in the anime stays in the anime (except for the thrill, enjoyment, friendshipshould I continue?).Lupin III (GMA)If not the highest, its one of the high-rated anime show broadcasted by GMA. Simply because it's appealing to different kinds of people, young or young at heart. Lupin and his gang's tricks were the climax of each episode. Add it with some fan service by Fujiko and you got a show that can beat soap operas. Oh and Inspector Zenigata's effort is worth crediting, even though Lupin can always find a way to get himself out of his hands.Mga Munting Pangarap ni Romeo (ABS-CBN)Originally known as Romeo no Aoi Sora. Another great World Masterpiece Theatre from ABS. I think the most unforgettable episode for everyone was when Alfredo, Romeo's best friend, died. Another was the turning point of the show, when Romeo and the rest of the "Black Brothers" were proven innocent against their rival "Wolf Pack". And if you've forgotten the endingRomeo and Bianca got married, and had a son name Alfred. Though honestly, I thought it would be Romeo and Angeletta.Mojacko (GMA)One thing I noticed was that GMA never showed the other opening and ending credits of this anime. Anyway, this is a very funny show, and there was one episode where Mojacko and some characters has mumps. I won't forget it cause at the same time, me and our maid were in the same situation. So that day wasvery funny, painful, and awkward.About the other characters, Mojaru and Dono were the ones I found amusing. Everytime Mojaru cried, there'll be like an earthquake. And when Dono has eaten a lot of sweets, he'll go berserk and do unexpected things.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (ABS-CBN)A groundbreaking mecha anime, besides Macross. This anime was the most popular at its era (and I guess the most controversial until now). ABS-CBN cut a lot of scenes, and pronounced the name "Asuka" - "A-su-ka", when it should be just "As-ka". What's great about this anime, was that there were a lot of memorable episodes, even though there's only 26 all in all. The most popular I can think of was when Shinji came to Rei's apartment to give her new ID, his timing was off (but not to other teenage boys) 'cause Rei has just finished taking a bath. Cut the story short, both of them slipped and Shinji was on top of Rei with his left hand on Rei's right breast. Phew~ This was also the first anime where I witnessed a slashy yaoi - it was on episode 24, just before the two unforgettable ending episodes in the history of anime.Pokemon (GMA)The first english opening version of this hit anime was sung by Billy Crawford, a worldwide-known Filipino singer. I'll admit that I'm addicted to this show when I was kid, even memorizing the 150 (151 if you include Togepi) Red and Blue version Pokemons. And joining GMA's promo, I sent like 5 letters each week (and never won). One of my classmates brought his Pokemon guide book, and the Pokemon that got my attention was Charmander (at that time I don't have any idea that he's one of Ash's main pokemon). Another classmate of mine memorized the famous quote of Team Rocket, and he was hailed by most of us.A memorable tagline of the show was "Poke-Friday"! ABS-CBN got its attention, and broadcasted a similar anime called Digimon in the year 2000.Remi (Nobody's Boy) (ABS-CBN)There were actually two Remi's that was broadcasted in the Philippines. First was this one, and the other was Remi: Nobody's Girl. From the two, I chose the original, 'cause I think it was more successful hit than the remake. Actually, the remake was a flop (according to AnimeNewsNetwork) that's why it has only 23 episodes, compared to the original which had 51.About Remi: Nobody's GirlWas pulled off the air after 23 episodes due to disastrous ratings. It was considered the worst of the World Masterpiece Theater due to drastic changes in the story (including changing the gender of the main character.)Ie Naki Ko Remi was the last series of the World Masterpiece Theater. The episode I can remember the most was when a pack of wild wolves attacked Remi and his friends (the animals), and I think some of his dogs saved him, and unfortunately they died.Samurai X (ABS-CBN)Rurouni Kenshin was quite popular in Studio 23 that's why ABS-CBN, it's sister company decided to make a tagalized version. The samurai action and comedy-drama formula was a great combination that's why the show garnered a lot of audience in the 90 s around the world.

The End of the Year

So here we are, 2013 came and went and while it might not have been the best year for this blog, it was, overall, a good year. After eight years, Season Two Volume Two of"Gargoyles" finally came out, if you haven't bought it yet, . I moved, I'm planning a new strategy to pursue my career and I am hopeful for a better 2014. I also learned that .

"Tarantino Month" which became "Tarantino Summer" which became "Tarantino Year" was a total bust because, well, I wasn't feeling it this year. Aside from the fact that I was very busy this year, busier than I've been in a long time, I just wasn't often in the mood to blog when I did have free time. I have no excuse, since I prefer to do the things I say I'm going to do, and for that I apologize. I could say that I plan to do more blogging this year than last, but I'm not sure if I'll have the time or the spark when I do have the time. But if I have something to say about a movie or a TV show, I'll post.

In the mean time, here's my year end review. Some of the grades may have changed since initial reviews (if there was an initial review) due to time and distance.

Gungrave [Animated Series]

This is a series I need to find time to rewatch as it has a constant dark presence over your typical quiet hero protagonist. It is similar to Berserk as far as personality and the theme it aims for. From the creators of Trigun I can see their style in some of the concept design. A worthwhile series that stands well on its own separate from Trigun.

Brandon Heat and his friend Harry are orphans on the streets surviving by thieving and other means. They soon gain the attention of high rise gangsters and gradually move up the chain of command. Throughout the series we see their friendship tested and evolve to become something neither of them truly saw coming. Betrayal is the main theme, but the series also includes survival through gaining power and the question of how long before it finally corrupts.

The Top Ten Series

Part two of my Best of Year list then - I watched 54 movies/OVAs/ONAs this year.I also included shorts in this, because there were some excellent ones this year, but I didn't like including them on the full TV series list due to their much shorter run-time.Once again I am so glad I have taken to writing down everything I watch in a year!

10. BERSERK: THE GOLDEN AGE II & III

Best Anime Series (Contains Spoilers)

* BERSERK (9.5/10)

Our hero, Guts, is unsure of his purpose, until he meets the charismatic Griffith, the leader of a band of mercenaries and whose grandiose plans include conquering the world. He also encounters Casca, Griffith's loyal, female subordinate. After joining Griffith's group, Guts believes he's found a true friend in Griffith. But Griffith seems to have a different perspective on friendship. Feeling unappreciated, Guts leaves Griffith and the group to seek out his destiny. What follows is a poignant tale of loss and betrayal. While watching the relationship between Guts, Griffith and Casca unfold, my emotions ran the gamut. In the end, I was left speechless. Berserk starts off choppy, and the ending is unfinished. However, its profound impact destroys any negatives.

Grandpa From The North Goes Fudge Cake Berserk

Fresh from Pitton Primary near Salisbury and Portland Place School in London, six new comics with titles dreamed up by the kids, containing strips by every single one of them, with caricatures of all of their faces on the back. Four of these are by Year 9 pupils (who I absent-mindedly wrote as 3rd Years on one of the covers, having spent so long teaching in Scotland and Ireland lately), hence the inexplicability of some of the titles.

When it came to naming a celebrity for that 'worm' thing that I do, they chose Johnny Depp, Simon Cowell, Richard Hammond, Andy Murray, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Nicolas Cage. I look forward to totting up the kids celebrities of the year when I've finished my final classes next week.

The year is coming to a close and so it's finally time for MY very own top ten toys for the year 2013. Release date is not important, but what is important is that I acquired it this year.

Although I've been spending most of my time writing my K-ON! Fan fiction, I've still been collecting toys on the side, however there were some financial troubles and some items I thought I'd be getting fell through--but, what can you do. I've also decided to do it in themes or groupings, that way I can feature more than just simply 10 pieces.

Neon Genesis Evangelion by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto

BACKGROUNDS OF EVE(A)

The title comes from the first Gospel written, transliterates evangelion from Mark 1.1, meaning good news: "The beginning [genesis] of the euangelion, thus genesis evangelion. This implicates the author of the anime version Hideaki Anno created by Gainax in a serious theological statement, but it is left to us to understand how far it should be taken. Although the anime version was conceived first, the "manga series by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and published by Kadokawa Shoten began in the February issue of Sh nen Ace in December 1994.[1] It consists of 13 volumes, each composed of several "stages" or chapters. Twelve of these volumes have been released before the TV series.

Top 10 Anime of 2013

I thought 2013 was a pretty weak year for anime. Of course there were certainly a decent amount of things that I liked and enjoyed. It was difficult compiling the top ten list this year. For the first time I have movies and specials on here simply because I didn't have enough TV series that I loved this year. Number ten was, again, a fight between a couple of series.

2013 Fall Anime Review

Fall is nearing its end; a list should be a befitting gift for this wonderful season.

This is my personal top 5 of the season. The list might be a little short compared to previous ones but a compact list with bunch of straight to the point reviews ins't bad at all.

12 Days of Meditations #4: How I delude myself into not dropping shows (feat. Kyoukai no Kanata)

Dropping anime is usually unpleasant. There's always an element of sacrifice involved: be it bandwidth or money or a favor from a friend who lent you the discs. And of course, the constant one is time. Accept it or not, you've spent time with a show-it could be a minute, or ten episodes' worth-and then you decide not to watch it anymore.

Some people drop anime without much difficulty. I envy them. I can't be the same-there's always a niggling voice in my head that tells me things, that:

Friday

Friday, and yesterday it was Bill Foulkes' funeral. A united player who scored an own goal in the 1957 Maine Road derby, who City played a testimonial for in 1970/71, a 3-0 City win. A legend who played in an era when their players were generally respected. RIP Bill.

Guess what? Nic Anelka pic returned (which I sent to West Brom a few weeks) ago with signature though it's difficult to decipher!

Happy Boxing day to my Europeans and Canadians, and post-Christmas to my American readers! Hope you all are enjoying the holidays, and take some time to treat yourself at you LCS today. Without further adieu, let's get this started...

Review: Hair Graffiti AKA Hair Chalk

Happy December!! For the festive months, I decided that I wanted to make my hair a bit more interesting, give it some puhzaz. So, before I could change my mind, I dyed half of my dark-brown-nearly-black hair, blonde. Then, three weeks later, I thought "stuff it, I'm going to go blonde," which I ended up doing and don't regret it. A day later, I saw a picture of Katy Perry's hair when she went through that stage with the bright highlights and really liked it. I went out to Price Attack, this beauty shop at the local Westfield and bought a 12 pack of colour chalk for $13. That night, knowing that I wasn't actually making a huge commitment, I went a bit berserk and used most of the colours on my newly dyed hair.I was torn between the blue and the pink, but pink won out because 1) it looked pretty bloody good and 2) pink is my favourite colour!

Anyway, my excuse for buying hair chalk was that I was going to review it. I know a lot of people are reserved about trying it because they don't know if it will actually wash out. I'm going to answer some questions that I know a lot of people have and explain how to use hair chalk as well as review it in this post, so do not fear!

This was what the box looked like, and I did have my reservations, but it was on sale so I thought I'd grab some.

Do the right thing

More and more unhappy people are expanding, and I have come to know about their existence. My close friends are usually single, and I have a few who have left our single club. Ah sad, right? Haha.

I know a few who had been out of the single club. We can see how wrong decision affect your life so much. We are able to see so many situations in which people we have cross path with caught with the wrong partner. I'm not referring to people whom have committed themselves with the partner, but those who had legally married. You can see for some, they are just the wrong fit. Others, you see that the other person is not even into them. What does it show? For a normal sensible person, you leave. Not all are sensible or rational enough. They become illogical when it is related to emotions. They go berserk. Only be with the people who wanna be with you, which makes it mutual, right? Excuses? Reasoning? It's pointless really, because if someone wants to be, it will be. It's whether he or she wants it. It's rather sad that people are willing to sacrifice whatever they have for that other person just because they just cannot be along. They become dependent to that other person for whatever reason there are.

Classic Movies About Circuses

The allure of the big top setting has long since faded, but for four decades starting in the 1930s, it was an ideal place to find high-wire dramatics, ferocious beasts, incognito killers, and perhaps a troupe of vampires. Laughs, too, as evidenced by the number of comedies set against a circus backdrop. W.C. Fields played a ringmaster in You Can't Cheat an Honest Man (1939), the Marx Brothers saved one from bankruptcy in At the Circus (1939), and even Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis got into the act with Three Ring Circus (1954).

I really just want to point out that I hate this show with a burning passion, because it is a waste of everything. It's a waste of time. A waste of effort. One might even say it was a waste of money to create. It could've been at least okay, but it has been slated to never rise above mere mediocrity because the people creating it just want to shit out every show based off of a manga they can get their hands on. Period.

Anime Year in Review 2013: Tops, Bottoms, and All the Rest/Best (Breast?)

This post is long.

Basically, this post is going to be a massive, long-winded and winding journey, akin to a mountain road carved painstakingly bit by bit along the edges of a tall mountain, a road that has solid rock wall on one side, multi-hundred meter drops on the other, and where stiff, bitter winds buffet anyone so foolish as to attempt traversing itwhich isn't to say you shouldn't try reading this post, don't let me put you off at all! I am stealthily writing it at work, though, so it may end up being a touch disjointed as I hurriedly close the window whenever I hear my boss's heels clicking toward me in a fashion that brings to mind blue-shift (and red-shift, of course, when she is moving away from me).

Thought For The Day

I remember reading in an old magazine article that when he was finally confronted with the truth - that he was No.1, the former No.6 seemed to go berserk, bringing destruction to the village before escaping with Number two, the butler and the youth.Well in my opinion the Prisoner didn't go berserk. Okay the former No.6 did try and lay his hands on No.1. But to me he appeared calm and calculating, in the way he set the countdown for the rocket, and the way in which he was instrumental in commencing a bloody and violent revolution. As I see it, it was No.1 who went berserk, charging about the Control Room, and screaming wildly, clambering up the ladder into the nose cone of the rocket, when confronted with the truth that he is No.6!

The Significance of Foil Characters

What is a foil? This is a literature term where it defines a character trait contrasting to another character, usually the protagonist in this case. The contrast can be acquired in a number of ways - by showing extremely different designs, personalities, ideals, mindset and mentality between the two of them. However, even though they are very blatantly different, both of them have a few similar qualities that will help tie both of them - so that, we, the third-person viewers, can compare them in the first place. Basically, in order to create a foil pairing of characters, they obviously had to be different so as to contrast, yet, possessing a similar foundation beneath their character design. Evangelion plays with this concept a lot, and chances are, if you had watched Death Note, Kira and L as well, is a prime example.

Togami: That isthe truth? But, Naegihow could you ? How could someone worthless like you reach this truth ? A truthI couldn't reach myself !

Blue To Red

NANCY COLLINS is a BRAM STOKER AWARD winning novelist who got into comics in the mid 90 s when she took her SONJA BLUE character to GLEN DANZIG'S VEROTIK. Now Nancy has joined up with DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT for two different RED SONJA projects. I chatted with her recently about both the collaborative effort and the one-shot:

BLEEDING COOL: MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH YOUR WRITING WAS WHEN YOU WERE DOING SUNGLASSES AFTER DARK FOR VEROTIK PUBLICATIONS BASED OFF OF YOUR NOVEL SERIES. NOW YOU'VE GONE FROM SONJA BLUE TO RED SONJA. BOTH ARE VERY STRONG LEADING CHARACTERS; WHAT OTHER TRAITS DO THE TWO HAVE IN COMMON BESIDES SOMEWHAT SIMILAR NAMES?

DLC#1-Sellswords

Dunno how long this DLC juggernaut will continue, but I'll have to say one thing: Fate/Zero analysis is now at indefinite hiatus. This is due to me being too stupid and delete entire folder's worth of 24 eps. Unless I can find some way to fix this issue, I need to do a pause here. :(

P.S: Apparently, this world is entering a new state of cynicism and I'm not just talking about a single front. If I really have a decent semblance of military knowledge, may Gibbo hire me instead of every party else.

A Tale of Beasts and Men

Every mortal is born to be a prison cell, a sword is all it takes to create beasts out of upright folks. If the best key is one which unlocks every gate, what manner of truth shall the daring witness see?

12 Days of Anime #6

For the longest time I did not exactly feel like buying anime DVDs. I mean, I am a huge consumer of the medium and France just happens to have a great offer (which became even greater recently) which is also mostly free. Not everything is obviously or else I do not know how they'd survive but once you get the hang of it, it is possible to get your fix free of charges. Except with one offer.

The topic is not that though. While I could have done a post on how the French version of changed my life, which I could do (should I?) I am going to talk about how the discovery of collector versions changed my life.

The Children (A Shitmas Post from Ryne Barber of The Moon is a Dead World)

THE CHILDREN

Tom Shankland's horror film The Children joins the ranks of movies that feature killer kids, the same kind of tots that should be excited for the Christmas season because they're going to be receing iPad Airs and PlayStation 4s and other things that even I can't afford to buy myself. What's wrong with these kids? They should be pumped about all the crazy gifts they're receiving!

To be fair, though, The Children actually takes place after Christmas, right before New Year's Day. Perhaps the kids had had enough of shoddy toys made from wood that Daddy tried to throw together right before Christmas Day, or maybe they were snubbed a Red Ryder BB Gun for the third year in a row. Whatever the case, the kids in the film are seriously not happy with their parents or really anyone at all, and they begin to revolt during a fairly calm Christmas vacation.
