Rewind: Berserk

I've debated featuring Berserk for several weeks now. Each time, I backed down before I could even type the title. Why? If I'm completely honest with myself, I realize it's shame. I watched something I shouldn't have.

Now, don't get me wrong: I'm not saying that I shouldn't have watched Berserk just because I'm a Christian. Yes, it's explicit, but sometimes, truths can be shown better in something rated TV-MA than TV-G. Nor am I passing any other sort of judgement on Berserk, good or bad... partially because it's been too long since I watched it. I'm just relating my experience, take it or leave it.

Gungrave [Animated Series]

This is a series I need to find time to rewatch as it has a constant dark presence over your typical quiet hero protagonist. It is similar to Berserk as far as personality and the theme it aims for. From the creators of Trigun I can see their style in some of the concept design. A worthwhile series that stands well on its own separate from Trigun.

Brandon Heat and his friend Harry are orphans on the streets surviving by thieving and other means. They soon gain the attention of high rise gangsters and gradually move up the chain of command. Throughout the series we see their friendship tested and evolve to become something neither of them truly saw coming. Betrayal is the main theme, but the series also includes survival through gaining power and the question of how long before it finally corrupts.

Record of Lodoss War

After mistaking Deedlit for a Marmo dark elf, out-of-work mercenaries Shiris and Orson attack Parn, Woodchuck, Etoh and Deedlit. When Parn disarms Shiris, Orson shows himself to be a berserker, someone possessed by a Hyuri (a spirit of anger). Shiris realises her mistake and tries eventually calms Orson down. Meanwhile Ghim is growing more anxious to free Leylia from Karla's possession and travels to Karla. He implores Karla to leave Leylia but she refuses and attacks him just as the rest of the group arrive. Karla shows Parn her old home of Kastuul, which was destroyed. She justifies that by killing Beld she prevented power over Lodoss from being under the control in just one place and that a war prevents total destruction of Lodoss, avoiding a repeat of Kastuul. She offers Parn to join her to help guide Lodoss with her but it angers him that she treats people as pawns. As the group tries to remove the circlet Karla unleashes her powers on them but Ghim is able to remove it at the cost of his life after bearing the brunt of her power. Leylia is freed from Karla but after Woodchuck disappears it is revealed that Karla has possession over him.

Jefferson Hawkins Explains the Ethics of Scientology's "Suppressive Person"

Have you ever seen an SP, Tom?Jefferson Hawkins was once the top marketing executive for the Church of Scientology and helped it reach its greatest extent with the famous "volcano" TV ads in the 1980s. He's told his tale of getting into and out of the church with his excellent books Counterfeit Dreams and Leaving Scientology, and he's helping us understand the upside-down world of Scientology "ethics."

Agents of SHIELD Recap: "Repairs"

This week's episode mark the return of show runners JED WHEDON and MAURISSSA TANCHAROEN as writers, and we finally get an episode about Agent May's backstory. Too bad the whole thing falls apart logistically in the second half.

We open with our guest starring problem of the week: Hannah, a safety supervisor from a particle accelerator laboratory that exploded, killing four people. She's trying to buy paper towels from a gas station attendant who is not particularly pleased with her job performance. He gets threatening and is suddenly pelted with with a hail of cans and overturned aisles. He flees, and as Hannah cowers inside, crying "Oh please, not again" gas station blows up.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 1x8

So, who saw ? Pretty great, huh? Action-packed, humorous, cosmic, just about everything you could want in a Marvel movie. Unfortunately for the denizens of the Bus, they missed the boat on Thor: The Dark World and drew clean up duty in Greenwich, England, site of the big conflagration between Thor and the Dark Elf Malekith (who is never mentioned.) Fitz complained that any monkey could pick up shards of alien metal and place them in secure S.H.I.E.L.D. casings for future analysis and storage -- and he would be correct. Why is Coulson's team doing this dirty work, exactly? Maybe Coulson just wants to be riding on Avengers coattails for old time's sake, you know, to stay on the cusp of the big leagues? Exposition from Simmons and Skye as to the nature of Asgardians as aliens and whether other cultures' gods ("Vishnu. Gotta be, right?" says Skye) are also aliens quickly and rather expectedly segueways into how handsome dreamy Thor is. May and Skye agree on this point, just like every woman I know in real life who has seen any or all of the three movies starring Thor. But if we're expecting to see Thor (besides footage of his boots in a montage) or any of his Asgardian buddies from the movies -- Odin, Sif, Heimdall, Loki -- nay, verily, look elsewhere, mortals of Midgard. The God of Thunder is officially "off the grid."

Not to say there is nothing Asgardian in "The Well," which turns out to be not so much influenced by any Thor movie. Rather, "The Well" strangely resembles THE DA VINCI CODE. Besides the globehopping -- Greenwich to Norway to Seville to Ireland -- and the presence of a mysterious academic who is not who he seems to be, there are also, in an attempt to shine a light on the torment buried within the action figure man named Agent Grant Ward, flashbacks to his most deeply buried memory of a child being trapped in a well. (Just like how DAN BROWN's tweedy hero Robert Langdon was trapped in a well as a child.) There are also the villains of the piece, a fanatical "Norse-pagan hate group" who could be stand ins for the religious fanatic Silas, all chasing after the MacGuffan of the story, in this case the three pieces of an Asgardian Berserker staff instead of a mysterious Codex. But I mean, close enough. AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. is definitely playing in Da Vinci Code territory here.

Anime: Naruto Shippuden Collection 14 Review

NARUTO SHIPPUDEN COLLECTION 14 (EPISODES 167-179) (12)2 Discs (Distributor: Manga Entertainment) Running time: 294 minutes approx.

Quite a mixed bag is this latest instalment of the perpetual Naruto Shippuden saga in that it is both introspective and retrospective. The set opens with the conclusion of the Pain arc in which Naruto is pushed to his limit by the pernicious ninja group who destroyed the Hidden leaf village. Having been disarmed by Pain, Hinata steps up to protect Naruto, finally declaring her love for him after god knows how many years. Unfortunately Pain is unimpressed by this touching scene and the meek Hinata is killed right there before Naruto's eyes. Unable to contain his rage any more the nine-tailed fox demon inside him takes over his body taking the transformation further than it has ever gone before - to eight tails!

It is here that the introspection aspect comes into play. While the fox demon is raging on the outside Naruto is trapped on the inside and the big bad beastie is manipulating our hero to unleash the final stage so he can avenge the deaths of Hinata and the others who perished back at the Village. It appears that the temptation is too strong but a shock visitor at the last minute helps put things into perspective for our troubled protagonist.

Anime: Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works Review

FATE/STAY NIGHT UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS (15)1 Disc (Distributor: Manga Entertainment) Running time: 107 minutes approx.

A war over the Holy Grail between formidable fighters known as "Servants", controlled by humans possessing magical powers called Magi. These fighters are figures from history given a new lease of life for the sake of the war. Caught in the middle is high school boy Shiro Emiya who discovers a classmate of his, Rin Tohsaka is a Magi with a Servant called Archer. During a clash between Archer and a mammoth Servant called Berserker, Shiro inadvertently summons his own Servant, Saber (sic), who leaps to his defence, marking Shiro's official entry into the Holy Grail war.

A glib summary but fans of the 2006 anime adaptation of Fate/Stay Night (released over here by MVM in 2010) will already be familiar with the story in great detail, something this film takes for granted from the onset. For those who have gone further than the anime and have taken in the visual novels, this film takes a different route to the one in the TV series, but ultimately this is pretty much a sprint through what we already know.

Yen Press has recently released the second volume, and you can read on for the review. (If you're interested in my review for Volume 1, )

Just like the Yaoi and Yuri Couples I Support post, this will be updated now and then as I remember. I am doing this out of not knowing what to post next. All that was mentioned on the aforementioned post will be the same here.

Just because it's a longer list than the yaoi/yuri pairings list doesn't make it less that I support them. Just because there are some from various works listed doesn't mean I support the rest; I could mean I don't remember whether or not I support them or their names.

Even by Decepticon standards, Blitzwing is totally insane. He's got three personalities packed into his cyberium-steel chassis, and he argues with himself almost as often as he argues with other Decepticons. The only person he listens to without interrupting is Megatron, because all three of his personalities are terrified of the Decepticon commander. He carries a superheater cannon and a hyberfrost emitter to burn or freeze his enemies. Add Decepticon power to your collection with this advanced-conversion, triple-change robot-to-vehicle figure. Detailed robot mode features three quick-switching faces, and can then be converted to tank mode with rotating turrets, or into its third mode, fighter jet. Blast missile projectiles from all three modes and plan your strategy for this Decepticon Berserker character. This figure comes with 2 missile projectiles.

Gaming: Warframe Update 11

Warframe just had their livestream a few days ago and after watching their update on what is expected on U11, I guess it's time to prepare to return to becoming a space ninja once again.Sharpen my parkour skills and my aiming. Now, I may share some stuff that was mentioned on the livestream but you probably can see the full summary on the forums. What is expected on Warframe U11 is that there will be 2 new bosses, 2 new warframes (Berserker and Ember Prime), a new tileset for Jupiter, and a revamp on a boss.Forgot what that boss was but it was something that can be viewed as a good thing.Armor/Damage revamp was also mentioned. Not sure about the details but they did say that if you haven't quit playing the game, then this update might give you another reason. However I guess they're just scaring their viewers because of the negative feedbacks they received on the forums. That's why I don't frequent the forums that much because they're all "you should do this because it sucks at the moment" type posters but there are a few with constructive criticism with valid ideas that can make it better.

They did show the PS4 version of Warframe. But I guess I'll still be sticking to PC since I can't just abandon my long hours since cross-platform isn't an option. They also presented a new GUI.Introduce Codex, where you can scan enemies and other stuff to collect data which is cool because it shows you what they drop and where they can be seen on a mission.Stealth has been boosted for more EXP.And they also introduced a drone machine that could mine and gather resources for you while you are away. They did mention that you can have more than one drone and can use two at a time. Not sure how that will work but I guess it's better to have a helper than none at all.If you missed the whole livestream, you can watch them here.

This show is Epic. Yeah I said it.

Yes, I know I am waaay late on this Anime. Over two months late. I kept watching the fall shows and also found new ones while I paused on this. And yet there is always a reason as to why Birdy has been held up. I have way too much criticism to give to this series and I would give it the award of "Most Disappointing Anime I have ever watched" with no hesitation. Yet, I loved it. I liked the concepts, styles, and themes it provided as well as the action it presented when it was given the chance. Also the 2nd season was awesome. But let's start out by roasting the show first though. I need ta get this off my chiest.

Welcome, gentle readers. I am back from Australia, and, yes, it was the trip of a lifetime. What an experience!

Fear not, though, I've kept our D&D Next campaign, Beyond the Borderlands in the back of my head. Sure enough, little gems surfaced as I worked.

Points of Articulation: Figma Casca Figure From Berserk

Max Factory continues their spectacular line of characters from one of the most violently beautiful manga/anime series ever, Berserk. Admittedly, I'm not as caught up with my anime as I would like to be so, when a friend suggested I borrow his copy of Berserk, I did. What an adventure. First released in the late nineties, Berserk is based of Kentaro Miura's ongoing Manga series. The anime only adapted the first story arc of the series, but recently the first three films of what is planned to be an adaptation of the entire series have been released, with the English cast all reprising their roles of the lead characters, Guts, Griffith, and today's feature, Casca.

If you're a fan of Berserk then you're going to want to pick up this figure. If you have yet to become acquainted with this series get to your local comic or anime shop. Or you can head over to and pick up all you can find, you won't regret it.

Wanna Be the Strongest! Episode 07

Oh god why is this show even allowed to air on television. Not because of its content, mind you, but rather because of its lack of content. Seriously, this is some of the most boring shit next to watching paint dry, and I sat through all of Shining Force NEO. Including the final dungeon. If you don't know what that game is, imagine Diablo 2 on easy mode. Now imagine all of the enemies are pretty much the same... that you have no real 'magic spells', and upgrades are mandatory to proceed.

Wait, no. Imagine Gauntlet. Only a shittier version of Gauntlet. There. You have Shining Force NEO. It sucked. But I think I might rather play through that shitfest than have to keep watching this show.

Samurai Flamenco

Samurai Flamenco: you are awesome! This episode was glorious on all levels! If you haven't seen the episode yet: close this browser at once and get to it! This is one episode you do not want to be spoiled on!

I had seen pretty much everyone freaking out about this particular episode, so when I sat down to watch it, I already had the mindset of "well this twist has to be pretty damn major here". It was. At first I thought that it was about Masayoshi finding out that his parents had been mugged instead of died from an illness like what he thought. That already was amazing to watch, due to how it was revealed.

America's Ex-Sweetheart

was once known as America's sweetheart, one who millennials alike loved. Through very successful , she has been typecast by the masses as the cute, funny, genuine girl-next-door actress that everyone would fall instantly in love with. You could imagine the shock when her first set of controversial pictures after a hiatus appeared on the Twitter sphere early this year.

Unexpected heavy make-up, cheek piercing

"Silent Witness: And then I fell in love, part 1-2a scary view of Muslim attitudes on western women

Every Friday now, they show "Silent Witness". A series we have followed through the years, about pathologists solving crimes. Unfortunately, it doesn't start until 22:00, when I am winding down, but for once they have at least been smart and showing two-part episodes back to back. You don't want to wait a week for the conclusion. But, it means staying up till midnight, which is not really my thing most Fridays. Last week I fell asleep the first five minutes and woke up right before the credits. Not so last night. This was a really nerve wrecking episode and one that leaves you with assured nightmares! No way I could fall asleep!

Perhaps I found it extra creepy, because I had just finished the book on Gaddafi's harem, earlier in the day. For two days I had spent my time, reading about a sex maniac that kidnapped teenage girls and raped them for years. I will do a write-up about that book in the next couple of days since it needs to be highlighted! But for now, I will leave it for the most part and get back to the TV program that kept the same theme and not only gave nightmares but also raised a lot of questions in me.

Figma: Asuka Langley Shikinami

As I have stated in my , Asuka in Figma form will be mine sooner or later! Well, sooner became a possibility and here she is now! This post will be a bit long since I will not only be viewing Asuka but a few other things I have had in mind for a bit.

So let's talk about the box first and how she looks fantastic in it(yes, she is blushing because we are talking about her). A standard box for Figma, but the Eva series being a bit bigger with the exclusive accessory that comes with these figures. The transparent 'window' allows the buyer to actually see the figure and some of the accessories that comes with it. The back side demonstrates some of the things Asuka can do with her articulation and her accessories. Of course the color concurs with the whole NERV honeycomb signature. The sides adding a figure pose to really accentuate the details and the capability. I will keep saying these in a lot of my toy reviews so bear with me when I say it all the time but some of the figures I do tend to buy have leniency for 'keep the value' collectors. Or in simpler terms, keeping them in the box. Suffice to say though, these figures and their accessories aren't given justice by just staying in the box.

Berserker

continues to pitch its game to new levels with its latest release [#313]. Bodyslam and Axel have tasked Billy Gunn, himself a new addition to the UCW roster, with breaking in longhaired rookie Erik the Viking. It's an assignment Billy takes on exuberantly, ready to vent his rage and good-ole-boy sadism on anything with a pulse and skintight spandex.

Imagine his surprise, then, when he discovers that Erik matches him berserker for berserker *. The 35-minute clash features the company's familiar blend of gut-punching, wedgy-yanking, nostril-stretching, and ball-smashing, along with bondage and a surprise finish that may rock you back on your ass.

In a video interview, currently playing on the UCW site, company co-owner Axel asks the Viking about his previous fighting experience. Erik says that most of his experience has been in martial arts with little experience with wrestling mat work. Against Billy, though, he shows no reticence in getting down with leg holds and chokes. Any challenges in translation from standing assaults to horizontal grappling appear minimal for the recruit. Nor does Billy's thickset build deter the wasp-waisted blond from wreaking all kinds of havoc upon it.

Shadow Hearts

Shadow Hearts holds the distinction of having the most kick-ass box art of all time.

Hehehe.Let's talk writing for a bit.Hehehe.Villains have made derisive laughter an art form. People love it.I used to practice my evil laughter as a kid.Hehehe. It even merited an Austin Powers gag. Hehehe.Used correctly, it can create an air of menace by painting a game's enemy as powerful and confident, a daunting task for the hero. Used incorrectly, it gives the impression that he may wander off in the middle of the battle looking for something to eat.

Not a Review, but Consider it a Halloween Bonus

So I don't usually spend a lot of time on creepy pasta websites; as a teacher, I understand that it's good exercise for aspiring writers, but I personally don't find them very scary. However, after the conversation I recently had with a guy who had been haunted, I feel I need to spread his warning to as many people as possible.

Recently, as you may have noticed, I've been playing through games in the Shadow Hearts series, a hidden gem of an RPG based on Lovecraftian horrors and demon possession. The game features some amazing design, but has a very aloof sense of humor, so like most horror fiction, I didn't find it very scary. However, I recently received an email about a comment on one of my posts about Shadow Hearts. It simply said,

The Dead Walk (and read and play). Newsletter 10/18/13

It's a good week to be a Walking Dead fan! The third novel about The Governor, called FALL OF THE GOVERNOR, is out. Also, a new bunch of those popular TV show action figures have arrived!

Also this week: another new issue of our beloved HAWKGUY! Joy!

Halloween Manga Recommendation: I Am A Hero

It's October and I've been re-watching some great horror anime series like Shiki andHigurashi: When They Cry. I also watched ,Yamishibai, that series consisting of thirteen 5-minute episodes with a couple anime bloggers. While some did a fairly job creating an eerie atmosphere and presenting creative scenarios, most were just laughable or too dull. I thought about writing about the horror genre for Halloween, but I've decided to save that for sometime later and write about some manga instead.

And yeah, I've been reading quite a lot of zombie manga, four to be exact. But for Halloween I would like to bring attention to just one manga in particular that I find to be quite brilliant.

King Kong (1933).

Official filmography

King Kong (1933). The original, classic film. Remembered for its pioneering special effects using stop-motion models and evocative story. Considered by some to be the greatest motion picture of all time.

Son of Kong (1933). A sequel released the same year, it concerns a return expedition to Skull Island that discovers Kong's albino son.

Road Trip: Le Creuset Outlet Store

Never trust a pot you can lift.

- Back in the late 90's, when I was first starting out as a home cook, I stumbled across a Le Creuset outlet store in St. Augustine, Florida. I bought a ton of cookware. OK, maybe not an actual ton, but I'm sure it felt that way to the UPS guy when the boxes arrived at my house. Now, I got crazy, and bought some things I shouldn't have - enameled cast iron , anyone? - But there were a couple of pieces I really loved. Like Big Blue, my , and the smaller that comes out every time I make no knead bread.
