Spring 2013 Episode Rankings

WordPress has changed its look ever so slightly. Nothing major, just that the toolbar at the top looks darker, and the text in the dashboard seems to be bigger (though I may be imagining that last part). However, it has reminded me that my blog itself hasn't changed its look since I had the Kaiji theme a couple of years agomight be time to play about with some other themes, or even just throw together a new banner. That might even be enough to inspire me to post more!

MOVING UP:

This week's sudden, unexpected top 5 debut: HYAKKA RYOURAN: SAMURAI BRIDE. In the first episode, the four Dark Samurai showed up out of seemingly nowhere, challenged Jubei and Co. to a duel in a month's time. That month was largely spent on running a maid cafe, training in the use of qi, and adding a few more Master Samurai to Muneakira's harem. Fun, light-hearted and a little ecchi, but lacking any really strong plot or character developmentuntil now. This episode revealed a lot more about the Dark Samurai, their imperfections, and why they were revived, all the while fitting in multiple, well-animated battles. Virtually every character got in on the action. Even Muneakira himself, having finally lifted his curse! I HATED the ending of the first series, but Samurai Bride is looking promising so far.

SUISEI NO GARGANTIA has also long since abandoned the slow-paced, happy, slice of life episodes to develop a darker, political storyline. The appearance of Colonel Kugel on Earth was an unexpected twist, and it is clear that (unlike Ledo and his obsession with performing his one duty, the destruction of the Hideauze), Kugel has realized that his highly advanced mech could be used to grant him power and status. He's basically being worshipped as a god! His methods of 'recruiting' other people and vessels into the fleet, making sure to keep them separated to lower the possibility of rebellion, is efficientbut it certainly doesn't look like a fun place to live. And now he's set his sights on the destruction of the Gargantia fleetIt'll be interesting to see how long Ledo continues to follow his orders after this revelation!

Spectacular backgrounds, nice, atmospheric musicbut too slow for me.

MOVING DOWN:

This week's AKU NO HANA was a little less action-packed than last week'sKasuga went swimming, took about two minutes to apologise to his parents that he wasn't hungry (it felt a lot longer than that), then he went to bed, and spent the second half of the episode dreaming about walking slowly. I think if you removed all the scenes where characters are just walking slowly, the series would be half as long as it is! Anyway, despite moving down, Aku no Hana somehow avoided placing in my bottom 5 for a second week in a row, which probably says more about how bad the eps I rated lower were than anything.

Tougher competition at the top meant that MUSHIBUGYOU slipped a bit, but this week's episode was almost as good as the previous one. This time it was Jinbei's turn to activate his ultimate power: ZEBRA-STRIPED TENTACLE HAIR! Which doesn't sound awesome, but somehow was. As well as the prehensile hair, he also developed super strength and speed, making quick work of the remaining Mushikari membersshame he had no control over this berserk mode, and couldn't tell friend from foe! But what exactly triggered the awakening of this power in the first place? The answer seems to be one of the Mushibugyou's white hairs, which he ingestedhang on, I'm sure I remember something similar to this last season

Cuticle Power!

GENERAL COMMENTS:

I don't think I like where UCHUU KYOUDAI is goingdon't get me wrong, the show is still fantastic, but Amanti's bad premonition (which until now had been little more than a joke, causing Mutta unnecessary worry and lack of sleep) seems to be manifesting itself in an unexpected and tragic way. Sharon isn't even that much of a major character, yet I really feel worried for her, which shows just how amazing the level of character development in Uchuu Kyoudai is. This episode would definitely rank higher if it wasn't so sad!

Mutta's Dad's shirts always make me smile, though.
