Image Set: Manga Covers

I KNOW THEY SAY YOU SHOULDN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER BUT WHEN IT COMES TO MANGA I SUPPOSE THAT'S ONLY HALF TRUE. I'M GOING INTO CAPTAIN OBVIOUS TERRITORY HERE, BUT YOU CAN REALLY TELL A LOT BY A MANGA COVER. ON A SLIGHTLY UNRELATED NOTE, WHEN IT COMES TO READING PREFERENCE, I WILL ALWAYS PICK PHYSICAL COPIES OVER READING ONLINE OR ON A TABLET. HOWEVER PHYSICAL COPIES AREN'T ALWAYS FEASIBLE WITH THEIR SLOW TRANSLATION AND RELEASE SCHEDULE SO THERE ARE A HANDFUL OF SERIES I CHOOSE TO READ ONLINE. EXCUSES FOR PIRACY ETC. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, NOTHING BEATS THE SMELL AND FEEL OF A BOOK. ANYWAY, BELOW ARE SOME OF MY FAVOURITE COVERS FROM MANGA, WITH SOME RATHER RANDOM THOUGHTS ON EACH SERIES...

GUNDAM THE ORIGIN - JAPANESE AIZOBAN

OK, Vertical did do a good job with the English release of this series so far. But I was a bit disappointed with the change in cover material and design. The Japanese Aizoban release but Vertical's just doesn't match up. We should consider ourselves lucky this is even getting an English release though. Vertical have taken some huge risks here.

DOGS BULLETSas time goes on it just gets less and less frequent. I really hope Miura gets his act together eventually. But if anything were to happen to him, he has assured fans that he has a "successor" lined up to finish the manga upon his death... Please don't be Kubo...

MESSAGE TO ADOLF - VERTICAL OMNIBUS

BWAHAHAHA! Oh Tezuka, you legend! These 2 covers are the most memorable in my physical collection and the series itself, one of my favourite. 9/10 times Tezuka will make me cry or at least feel very fucking depressed. If you're looking for a more serious, down to earth read in the Tezuka library, this is the best place to start.

OYASUMI PUN PUN

Will this ever be animated? 2012/2013 has had some pretty interesting announcements anime wise so I don't think the idea of this getting an adaptation is that ridiculous anymore. As well as that, I'm hoping Vertical might pick this up in the near future. It seems like their style, but they have stated that they don't like publishing titles with over 5-6 volumes... Maybe I should pester them a bit more on Twitter/Tumblr.

DOROHEDORO

Words cannot describe my love for this manga. It's the perfect mix of horror, black comedy and slapstick. I've never read anything like this before, it's truly an original work. , who is a huge fan of Nihei, really infused his style into this work and to tell the truth, I actually prefer her work. It's a lot more coherent than Nihei's.

VAGABOND - VIZBIG

The Vizbig version of Vagabond is handy, last count I had over 250 physicalmanga books. Most of which have now been boxed up due to lack of shelf space. Omnibus editions like this are a life saver, if it were any other way Vagabond would be taking up an entire shelf at this point (like Berserk is currently doing in my sitting room). These Vizbig versions take some of the best covers from the original volumes and just put a neon coloured filter over them, it seems lazy but it actually turned out pretty well for them.

CARDCAPTOR SAKURA - OMNIBUS

I'm sorry, I had to. I adore this series and many other Clamp works. Their manga is a guilty pleasure. The final volume of this omnibus edition was published after Dark Horse had changed their spine logo placement. Which has infuriated me as a collector... Could they not have just published it with the old design to keep things consistent? They also did this with and I hope to God they don't attempt it with Berserk. Strongly worded emails will be sent (and most likely ignored)

JAJA'S KOOKY QUEST: Well, I looked at every damn cover and I just couldn't choose, therefore it's getting its own separate post. LOOK FORWARD TO IT, I DARE YOU.
